Range Report .500 S&W
« on: January 31, 2011, 05:05:54 PM »
Finally made it out to shoot my Gray Beard special,I bought the barrel, stock and receiver here.
The barrel fit was perfect and of course the stock set was good to go. Also the bullet, brass and dies which came with the barrel.
But best of all it shot great.    :) 8) ;D   Tom

I love the look of those straight grip stocks.

That's a nice looking setup you got there.
I'm becoming a big fan of the straight stocks too. I've reshaped a couple pistol grip stocks to straight grip and refinished them.
How do you like the sights on it? Some guys have complained of durability issues with the plastic sights but it looks like yours are working just fine. ;)

Nice shooting!
When mine arrives, I hope to get out to the range. What make of stock is that? Nice looking.

That is a factory laminated, cinnamon, straight grip stock. If you enlarge a bit you can even see a H&R medallion in the stock.

A pawn shop here in town has a new in the box 500 S&W for $239.  I been trying to get a 35 Whelen and almost changed my mind and bought the 500.  What helped me to not make that decision was the price of the ammo.  Wal-Mart has a box of 20 Hornady 350 gr for $56 a box, which seems pretty high to me.  Online searches show that good hunting ammo runs about $60 for a box of 20.  I'm setup to reload, but I would have to buy brass and dies and didn't want to do all that right now.  Would be fun to shoot one of those every now and then though.

If I didn't load, I wouldn't have even purchased my .500 S&W barrel!  After bulk buys of brass and bullets, I'm shooting it with costs that allow me to shoot as much as I want, AND, I can make can poppin' loads that my 9 year old grandkids can handle, all the way up to Mastodon busters!
Don't put off loading, for this or any other round!  It's NOT rocket science, and the cost savings over factory loads is substantial, as well as being able to tailor loads that are NOT available over the counter.  Do it!
I told my pap and mam I was going to be a mountain man; acted like they was gut-shot. "Make your life go here, son. Here's where the people is. Them mountains is for Indians and wild men." "Mother Gue", I says "the Rocky Mountains is the marrow of the world," and by God, I was right. Keep your nose in the wind and your eye along the skyline

Beaverslayer, just get it, but dont buy ammo at all, throw that money at reloading stuff and in what, maybe only 150rds worth of factory you are good to go from here to eternity. At first I wouldnt even buy dies, just brass and some cast bullets to fit the fired case necks. Deprime, reprime, powder and lead........bang!
