Ready to buy
« on: February 07, 2011, 08:51:15 AM »
Appreciate all the feedback here a few months back on a beginner bow. Spent some time at the range since then, did a lot more reading. Also had to clear out some other projects, and "right size" some $, but I'm better than almost certain I am ready to buy.

I am set on the Samick Sage RH in 45#; got to handle it at our local shop and it suits me fine. They offer a "kit" but 3Rivers has a better price on their Samick Sage kit, and I'm wanting a couple other things from 3Rivers. (I'll take the bow into the shop for set up, and arrows.) The kit has a back quiver, armguard, stringer, case, and choice of tab or glove. The other things I'm looking at are: bear hair rest & arrow plate, and string silencers (probably cat whiskers). How's that sound?

sometimes paying a lil extra for your stuff at a shop is better . hard to take something back or get advice from three rivers . im all for looking a person in the eyes when i spend my money . and the man at the shop should be more than help full if you spend you money there .  as long as its not a really big difference .  h

I just bought a sage in 45# about a month ago and I love it. I have only taken it out about 3 times due to the extreme cold weather, but it has performed wonderfully. I did ditch the fast flight string for a flemish twist dacron one. I think you're making a great choice especially for the money. I plan on using mine for spring turkey and couldnt be more excited!

All the $ for the stuff I was selling on the classifieds here all came in so I placed my order - had a discount code for 3 Rivers which even after shipping put it below local price with tax. And the local shop will help me set it up and fit some arrows for me, so they'll still get my business. Went for the 45# RH Kit, plus a bear hair rest and plate, and cat whiskers. Can't wait!

Bow came in, she's a beaut! Took it down to my local shop and put a nock on it, set the brace height and picked up some XX75 2117s. (There's a $10 off coupon on Easton xx75 black arrows, dozen, going on.) I'm in love!

Good set up to get  your started! Now lots of Practice, form form and more form and parctice.  If you can find coach or mentor to help you along that will help.  Not everyone can give you qualifed help but everyone will have an opinon. Of course you probalble knew that too

We set up a target in the garage, about 10yds, and my son and I have been shooting about 100 times each per day. Definitely see a marked improvement - everything in an 8.5x11 piece of paper is the norm now after a couple days, with some touching groups of 2 or 3. The string relaxed down to a 6.75 brace height, so I just set it up to 8 (read a couple recommendations to that height for this bow). So far so good! Went out to the public range yesterday, but everyone else was shooting mechanical bows. One arrow bent - hit the metal frame on the target stand, popped it backwards but not before bending right at the tip a little.

Now my son is hinting he may want his own bow ... couldn't be happier! He's left-eye dominant, but right handed, but he seems to be doing well with this RH bow. I may see if there's lefty at the public range some time that would be willing to let him check it out before we picked up another bow.

Nice things about shooting the bow is you get your ammunition back, usually.  Stock up on some more arrows.  If your son is left eye dominate you will eventually want to get him a lefty bow.  At ten yards there is not much distance to see the effect, also one can train themselves to shoot oppostie the dominat eye, but if you can afford it get the correct equipment for your son to shoot, in the long run it will pay off.  Some bowmakers/dealers offer some kid of youth trade in program. With my sons bow made by Elkridge Archery when we are ready to trade up in size/weight we can get 50% towards a new bow if my sons bow is in good condition.  Have fun!!
