45 bullet choice for hogs
« on: February 06, 2011, 01:09:06 PM »
A friend of mine just went hog hunting and got a nice 350 pounder with his rifle. I have never hunted anything bigger or meaner than whitetail deer, but I think I would like to try the hogs with my 454 Casull revolver.

I have a nice, relatively easy shooting, load that launches a 260 grain WFN GC bullet at 1440 fps.

Will this provide reliable penetration and a quick kill (assuming I put it through the vitals)?

Or do I need to work up some loads with my 320 LFN bullet? I understand that mass is more important than velocity for ensuring full and deep penetration.

I have never hunted anything bigger than deer and I have been told that hogs can be a lot bigger, tougher, and meaner.

If you put EITHER of tose bullets where it belongs you will have pork chops in the larder in short order...  ;D

I figure if a 40 S&W launching a 155gr JHP and a 38spl +p launching a 148gr JHP both at 1100fps will do the job, then I think you have quite enough to dispatch a pig.  Just pick your shot carefully. . . brain, neck, or heart.

As for hogs being bigger, tougher, and meaner. . . well, they can be bigger, but they're only mean when they're cornered or injured, and they die just as swiftly from bullets as anything else. . . I have yet to see anything shot at them "bounce off."

454 casull + hog=meat. You'll be fine
an unloaded wepon is equal to the same mass and volume as a rock.

I usually shoot a 300 LFN out of my FA, but wouldn't hesitate to go with the 260 WFN.  I doubt that you will recover that bullet from any hog.
If I agreed with you then we would both be wrong.
