Favorite loads for 223 (will be for a bolt action Savage)
« on: February 06, 2011, 12:18:05 AM »
I am getting a bolt action Savage AXIS (EDGE) in .223 and am asking if anybody would like to share their favorite recipes for reloading. The barrel has a 1 in 9 twist, and I've been told 65grain and over are not accurate, but might try to find that out myself.

Any recipes appreciated, but if you have a bolt action please let me know, and if possible brand and the twist rate of your barrel to compare with mine.

Thanks in advance!

Depends on the  bullet length.  Which usually the heavier the longer is true.  Don't know why they said anything over 65 grains, my H&R with a 1-9 twist would shoot 69 gr sierra's less than an inch at hundred.  I would say over 75 grains would be pushing it for a 1-9 twist.

Really depends on the gun and load.

LHS, I'd start with a 50-55 grain bullet and any of these powders:H-335 H-4895 Win748 or IMR 4895.Do your own homework for proper powder weights. This should give you a good starting point.

+1 to chutesnreloads.... I would start with 55 grain bullets.

I shoot a Savage Predator - same twist but a heavier barrel.  My rifle will shoot anything between 50 and 75 grain bullets. I've tried various weights and bullet shapes. My most accurate loads are 55 grain Hornady V-Max behind 27 grains of Varget and CCI primer. This is a sub-MOA load at 100 yards. (I did try some 63 grn Siera Gamekings, which I think are a superb bullet, but they didn't shoot as well as the V-Max)

Have fun!

I use the 55gr V-max and 26 gr of RL15. Avg group of .850 @ 200 yds from the bench in good conditions.
