S&W M57 in 41mag
« on: January 27, 2011, 12:50:50 PM »
I went browsing for a new 1911 and found the S&W model57 in 41mag in nickel finish w/6" barrel.  A few hundered below the list.(list $1,161/ sale $699)  You know i can't pass up a deal.  Now i want another one w/4" barrel for CCW.  Its got the most awesome trigger i have seen on a new revolver too.  This is my very first smith & wesson after all these many years.  I'm surprised that for all these many years that have passed that S&W is still offering these classics. What do you guys think??

I think you made a good choice and the price was right. I would go for a 4 inch as well for a good packing gun. I like the 41 Magnum.

Sounds like you done good. I wish I had never traded my old 4" M57. It had the best trigger ever.

I recently saw a new M57 Smith for sale for $135!  Lets see that would have only been............ close to 40 years ago.  They are a really fine piece, too bad I didn't have the $135 back then ha ha.

Yup looking back my ruger redhawks were just $350 too.  In the 70's my ruger 357mg snubbie cost me $135 while my 444s marlin was only $145 on the same purchase slip.   At the sametime my rcbs rockchucker press was $59 and the reloading accessory kit was $59 also at the time. But the 8mm surplus FN ammo was $18 for 70rds too which was pretty expensive before the flood of surplus ammo happened.  At this time finding any surplus ammo was slim to none.   So the old days were good and bad too.

Right now the S&W M57 is listed for $1,161 and i got mine for just $699 nib so i didn't do too bad. I love the 41mag round too and so did Elmer Keith too. I think the S&W model 58 w/4" barrel and fixed rear site in 41mag is an excellent CCW gun.

Around the late 70's i packed up all my gun stuff and put it on hold to raise a family.  I didn't have much extra $$ too back then.  But now with all the kids grown and left the nest its my time to enjoy life and get some toys to play with.  Life does go full circle and we come back to where we left off.

Which one would you purchase the S&W m57 4" barrel in nickel w/adjustable rear site of the S&W M58 4" barrel in nickel with the fixed rear site, both are in 41mag???  I'm torn between the two and would like to purchase both but right now i need to pick one for this month.  I think these are also marked $699 too. There is something about the 41mag that is calling me to it. Plus i got the S&W "N" frame flu too.

I'm also eyeing the S&W M29 w/6.5" Barrel in nickel finish  and the S&W M27 w/6.5" barrel in blue too.   Smith & Wesson is still offering these under there "Classics".  I like the quality of there nickel finish and i'm not sure how much ;longe rwe will see these classics being offered.  All the rest of the manufacturers seem to discontinue these awesome revolvers from way back when we were kids.  I didn't have the extra $$ back then but i have a little mad money and a window of oppertunity right now.  I would like a few more 1911's to play with but while the S&W  classics are still being offered today i figure its time to jump on that bus too.

If both of the revolvers are earlier ones, I'd say buy the Mod. 58 because they're harder to find.  I've bought 3 or 4 Mod. 57 revolvers, but have never owned a Mod. 58.

Is the .41 Mag making a comeback. Seems like I've seen more in gunshops lately than I have in years.  I would take the 57 over the 58. I like the ability to load it down and would prefer the adjustable sights.

My new S&W model 57 w/6" barrel has the key loc.  Some hate it and some say its ok.  I don't have any kids living home anymore but i have grandchlidern now. Gun safety is up to us and these need to be locked up when the small kids are present.  If this loc just saves one life somewhere its well worth it then i can deal with it. One of my last SA 1911a1's also has the key start too.  As long as it functions ok its ok with me.  CZY

The 41mag is finally getting the attention it never had in popularity too.  I see a few shooters who don't like the recoil of the 44mag with magnum loads yet want something bigger than the 357mag wether its to hunt or just shoot with the 41mag will fill in that gap very well.  I think i'm going to like it too. But i always had the 44's for most of my gun life too.

I think your right my gun shop has plenty of them too in different models, i can't beat that price too.  I see the older ones on the net going for around $900 while the brand new ones list for $1,161.  I just got my 57 w/6" barrel in nickel for $699 brand new.  I had to buy it.   The model 58 with the fixed rear site is better to CCW because it can't catch on your clothing when you pull it out, thats my opinion anyway. (no adjustable rear site) Thats my excuse to purchase both the 58 & the 57 w/4" barrels right?   The snubbies in 44mag and in 41mag look interesting too.  I just hope that S&W still offers there classics so i can get a few. There's something about a 41mag maybe its the overlooked underdog is what i like about it?    We owe Elmer Keith for it anyway.     CZY

I don't see much in the S&W N frames in 357mag but the model 27.  I always liked the N frames in 357mag too.

Everyone should have a dirty harry revolver :).   I had a taurus titainium  in 41 mag for a while.  Its a highly underrated cartridge.  210s are great for defence and whitetails and 250-280 cast loads for big stuff.   Sounds like you got a great deal.
