Off the wall conversion
« on: February 17, 2011, 04:37:24 PM »
A few weeks back I bought a tokarev, then had so much fun with it I bought another and just under 4000 rds of milsurp ammo.  Along came an ad in the paper and I just could not turn down a local guy who was moving and needed cash fast for almost another 7000 rds.  I am now the proud owner of more ammo than i think it is possible to shoot in my lifetime.  I am wondering about the feasability of a handirifle conversion, maybe two of them, to 7.62x25mm Tokarev ammo.  This pistol/machine gun milsurp ammo seems to shoot well out to 50yds.   Any information would be appreciated.  I have whacked off the barrell and recrowned a few handirifles but nothing like this.  I assume I would have to start with a SB2 frame but I have no idea what barrell to look for in such a conversion.  My competence is not in the area of machineing.  Total barrell would probably be 18", total length 34".  If this is the wrong place to post this thread let me know and I will try to redo it correctly.
Thanks in advance for any help,

Hodr

There are I'm sure handi's that have the correct bore size but a rechamber is likely not possible.. as the Tokarev round is smaller than most other cartridges.. A Handi barrel could be bored out on a lathe to produce a sleeve with attached underlug ans a barrel of the correct bore size turned to fit and sweated into place.. This would vreate a mono-block that could then be fitted and chambered to the 7.62x25,, Head space would be set during the chambering process.  Not totally familiar with Handi-rifles but they are to my limited recollection beam welded to the under lug which would easily be sufficiently strong.. Setting the barrel up to run true around the bore center and turning the barrel out of what is to be the mono block can be done easily in a lathe with a boring head.  This is not likely to be a cheap process unless a lot of the work can be done by yourself.

lots of info in handi forum and FACS on barrel stubbing. This would probably be the way to go. still not cheap.
thanks Don.

I have just such a Handirifle. A Hornet barrel was used for the stub and rechambered for the Tokarev. 308 barrel was attached. It shoots 11/2" on average at 100 ids.

I believe someone makes a 7.62X25 to .308 adapter.

If you had a .223 bolt gun, Ruger #1, or anything else with a replaceable barrel then it gets easy. Just need a new barrel, and keep your old one for when you run out of ammo. Use a single shot follower and you're in business. Personally I think a CZ 527 with a barrel replacement and one of Calhoon's single shot adapters would be cool. Light weight and handy little rifle. I've thought about doing one of those for some time now, just never stepped up to the plate and forked over the bucks. Fred Zeglin at 4D reamer rentals has the reamer and headspace guage for rent.
