Greetings:

I had cataracts removed from my left eye 5-6 years ago, now my right eye is getting very bad.  Will probably need another operation within a year.  I shoot with my right eye, and when I look at a target I often see double images, so the challenge is to figure out which is the correct set of reticules, etc.  Anyway, yesterday at the range I said to myself, self.....why don't you just switch over and shoot with your left (clear) eye.  So I did and I was a bit surprised by the resulting group.  Not sure why I was surprised, but I was.

I was shooting my H&R 223 Ultra at 100 yards from a bench rest.  Tell me what you would expect to happen, then I will share what actually happened.  I have not done any research on this at this time.  Thought I would get some input from y'all first.

I would expect the groups to open slightly and poi be to the right. I dont know will have to try it sometime,just incase its needed. Did you still shoot right handed,just useing the left eye?

Danny-L...I actually put the gun on the left shoulder and shot 3 rounds aiming with my left eye, and using my left hand to manipulate the hammer and trigger.

From my experience switching students, your group should have tightened up, but moved to the left slightly.

I am right handed and right eyed. The right arm is currently out of commission due to surgery so I can't even shoulder a rifle. I did go left handed pistol shooting last Friday after therapy. I had no problem with sighting. I didn't even pay any attention to which eye I was sighting with. I did have a little trouble with grip and trigger control which I had expected. I was pleasantly surprised at how well I managed to shoot with my left hand.

Maybe after a couple of more weeks of torture, uh, therapy, I will be able to prop my arm on a bench and get in some left handed rifle shooting and see how well the left eye thing works for me.

Keep in mind that it was very cold the day I shot, and that I had been shooting for some time, so I wall chilled to the bone.  Anyway, my three shot group was about 2 inches left and probably the same distance high.  The group itself was not very good...probably 2.5 inches.

I can see the value of doing this, at least with hunting rifles.  You never know what you may have to do to make a shot, at it would be very important to know generally how your point of impact is likely to change.  I am going to wait for some better weather and go through this process on all my hunting guns and my crossbow.
