Since the early 70's, as far as I recall anyway, Savages' solution when the receiver mounted selector failed was to replace the hammer with the newer style that had the selector in the hammer. I seem to recall replacing quite a few. The button and internals were removed, leaving a slot in the receiver. I don't believe Savage had parts available for the earlier selector and phased it out after the upgrade. I prefer the later hammer mounted selector, partly because my first gun, a 22Mag/20ga had a hammer mounted selector, partly because I believe it was alot more reliable. Not sure when they changed - my gun was built in about 1968. If the time comes that I had to make a selector instead of being able to buy one, that's sure the one I'd want...
