Will this thing hold a hog?
« on: September 14, 2011, 12:32:48 AM »
I can no longer shoot in the area I used to hunt hogs in.  I am gonna start snaring them.

The "Corps" removed all of the trees along the bottom of the levee when they widened it.  So, because there are practically no trees, I must use an anchor of my own making to hold them.

Another snare trapper suggested trailer Tie-Downs.  I don't know if he was serious or not, but I found this.  Watch the little 2-second animation.  Check out the amount of weight they hold.

I can make the anchors out of 4-6 or 8-inch flat-bar.  Each anchor would cost me about $1.00 apiece to build myself including the blade, cable and ferrules.  I plan on putting 2 homemade swivels in the line to the snare.

Fur trappers have been using a smaller version of this anchor for years to catch everything from muskrat, coon, beavers to wolves.  I'm just wondering if a rig like this would hold a hog.  We see some 200 pounders.  Not many heavier than that.

I believe this will be as difficult to pull out as a T-Post would.

Y'all have any thoughts on this?

Sounds like it time for a bow or crossbow.
Those may work on the smaller ones, you may want to use a few and drive them deep and space them apart.

Can't hit the ground with a bow.  And, can't afford a crossbow.

Wish I could figure out a way to put down two anchors, and have the hog pulling equally on each one, so that one anchor would never be handling ALL of the tension.

Rig up some sort of shock cord with inertubing.
We do it for shark fishing and it works well, and cheap, if you need cheap.
Think outside the box if you have to.

yu might try a single cable between both anchors, then a heavy ring or chain link on that cable attached to the snare.that would equalize it.for more holding power make the anchors bigger. a lot would depend on the type of soil they were in and how deep they were driven in.

you can get big springs at the hardware store.  I've got one that'll probably hold a 300lb hog.

I don't have a clue about catch holding, trapping or fencing feral hogs, but the tame ones used to live happily in a chickenwire enclosure at my Granpa's house...as long as they had plenty to eat.....and you didn't mess with the shoat's.
