.30-30 Nosler Partition
« on: February 12, 2011, 06:14:42 PM »
Hi all,

I'm looking to develope a load for my .30-30 and want to use these Nosler Partition 170gr FP's for hog hunting. However I'm worried that the bullet may not perform at .30-30 velocities. Nosler says the bullets have to go a least 1800 fps others say 2000 fps is the minimum. Anyone have any experience with this?

You should have no problem attain enough velocity for that bullet. (In a rifle) It IS designed for the 30-30 velocity range.

BUT I must say, its not needed. They don't sell many of them because of that. Just use a Hornady, Speer or Sierra 170 bullet and you will be just fine. It will mushroom like if should and likely penetrate thru and thru. You see unlike other bullets and diameters, the 30-30 stands alone in its velocity range. (The 30 rem is long gone as is the 303 Savage that shared it) Pick a 150 spitzer bullet and the manufacturer couldnt know if the end user loaded it in a 300 whisper or a 30-378 weatherby... But a 170gr 30 cal RN/FN bullet is made explicitly for a tubular magazine and 2000 +- velocity. Its been around for many many moons and they all have the recipe down in stone.

Its your $$, but I gotta say the Partition is NOT needed in a 30-30 caliber.

probably a great bullet but like longshot said a premimum 3030 bullet isnt really needed for hogs. Ive used corelocks on deer and  bear with absolutely no problems. Never shot a pig with one but im sure it would do just as well.

Like the others have mentioned, unless your looking to possibly come across something that might bite or claw back, the bulk 150 or 170gr CL's will get the job done on any hog you put them to task on.

I have shot quite a few of them in reduced loads through my .308 and also shoot them in my 14" 30-30 AI Contender.
