Could you define heavy.  I'm casting a 305gr GC .411 bullet.  It has a 78% metplat.  Actual weight with Wheel Weights is 296 w/gc seated.

Mould is available from Mountain Moulds.  Listed as a 41_FC_305

HHI 812;

HH: (I'm) Looking for suggestions for some heavy cast bullets for a single shot pistol chambering.

F: How heavy?

RCBS makes nifty 40 caliber rifle bullets on up there to 400 grains for example. It seems a bit heavy for a short gun but then heavy is as heavy does.

Good afternoon,
Forrest

I'm working with 250-265 grains

I've been working with 250 to 265 grain LBT designs in my 41 mags.  Mostly I've used Cast Performance made bullets and mostly in the Federal Castcore and Corbon Hard Cast factory loads in 41 Rem Mag.  I'm pleased with them and they work well.  The 255 wfn gc is the most appealing to me.  Now if I could just hold steadier I'm sure they are pretty accurate.  I've shot them in my SW 57 4", Ruger Bisley 7.5 in and Redhawk 7.5 in.  They do well in all.

I'm  bit chicken when it comes to reloading them to full power and have mostly used 2400 in below max loads.  I think 296 and H110 hold better potential for high velocities but I haven't done much work.  Try Cast Performance's web site for recommended loads.  Anbd there are some serious 41 folks on the Hunting handgun forum here that may provide some data too.

JJFly - Wow that 296 gr bullet sounds like serious lead slinging - any reports on game performance?

JJ, where do you get the .411" gas checks?  I need to find a bullet that will weigh about 255-270gr. in a 1:20 alloy that will measure .411".  I'm shooting an original Winchester 1886 in .40-82WCF and it doesn't like the .410" plain base bullets I'm using at all.

NEI used to carry 40/41 gas checks.  Since Walt Melander died, I don't know if the new owners of NEI still have them.

But Walt said he got them from Bullet Swaging Supply, Inc.  303 McMillan Rd. PO Box 1056, W. Monroe, LA   71291.  Phone (318) 387-7257.

The .411 296gr GC bullet I shoot uses Hornady 416 Gas Checks.  I snap them on and run the whole thing through the Lubri-Sizer die.  The crimp on nicely.  Works really well.

I haven't used them on game... yet.  Hoping to hog hunt yet this winter.  I sent 50 bullets up to Dr. Charlie Sharps.  He shoots a 405Win Contender like I have.  Actually, I got mine on his recommendation.  He's going to probably use them on game before I will.  If anything happens, I'll let you know.

Mountain Moulds has another bullet with one less driving band.  It weighs 285gr with a gas check and a 70% Metplat.  With a 20:1 tin mix, probably come in at around 270gr.
