45-70 muzzleloader conversion range report
« on: February 15, 2011, 02:03:45 PM »
I took my old 45-70 muzzleloader conversion (Bubba Hyde) to the bench today. I had some Hornady 210 grain 41 Mag XTP bullets that I made a couple of sizer dies for and sized the bullets down to .404". I also used some Harvester 45 caliber Crush Rib sabots for these bullets. I didn't setup the chronograph today but will definetly try this load again and check the speed of it.
Any way my very first 3 shot group at 100 yards with this bullet/sabot combo came in at 3/8"! ;D ;) :)
Here is a pic of old Bubba Hyde and the group I got with it today.

GOOD SHOOTING!

Thanks bikerbeans, I built this gun for smokeless powder and I installed a Savage Breechplug. The powder I was using today was H-4198.

Well, that's passable for a first try.  Looking forward to when you get it tuned in.

Wish I could hold anything that tight anymore, I'd be having to have the stupid grin slapped off me if I'd have shot that with a brand new rifle.  Well done and congrats.

Hey Tencubed, I think I've still got a little bit of that stupid grin left over from yesterday! :o
Thanks!

Hey Shu, No I didn't do a build along post when I made this rifle. I've been shooting it for over 3 years now and there is a post or two about some deer hunting success stories. I do have a post about a Handi Conversion that I built for my dad for his Christmas present. I posted it back in Nov or Dec 2010.
