They had the same situation in  evergreen colo but after they opened the same protesters were there shopping. This is merely politicians trying to get the union vote.

Wal-mart is a love/hate relationship for me.  Unfortunately wally has basically ran off the little guy making it just about the only place to go, especially in the smaller towns.  Its nice because its sorta convenient, but really its a PITA at time.  Also rings my tail that at like my local store they have 28 or so checkout lines,  most I have ever seen open is like 5 or 6,  usually its one at each end of the building.

Wal Mart doesn't really care. They are one of the biggest dogs on the block. Little town across the Pecos river became a place where they wanted to open a store. It's not a large town but it's a long drive to another town with a Wal Mart. Independant oil company pretty much dictates what the town wants and doesn't want.  ::) They told Wally World they weren't coming in and refused to sell them the land they wanted. Wally World didn't blink, just told them "we will buy the land elsewhere" and they did.  It's not a large store compared to most Super Wal Marts but it is nice and it ALWAYS has a lot of customers. It hasn't put any of the other stores out of business but their prices are "better" now.  ;D

Went to visit a friend in Del Rio, Texas.  Del Rio is a small town, not big enough to support a Wal-Mart, or Mall, but they got one.  Wal-Mart starts a bus running from the border every morning, from the border to the store.  Then from the store to the border.  It's ten minutes each way, with five minutes to unload then reload passengers.  There is no shortages of passengers.

Here in Fairbanks we had a Gottschalks, Fred Myers, a small Sears store, and a K-mart.  During the pipeline, these big stores came in and ran all the smaller stores out of business.  Some of the little Mom and Pop stores were able to hang on till the pipeline was finished, but when the building was over and the piopulation went down they were forced to close.  Then K-mart closed, The Fairbanks store was making money, but it was too far from Corperate headquarters so it had to go. The K-mart building is still sitting empty.  Gottschalks closed, Being the end of the line they took the same clothes they had put in storage in the fall and brought them out again in the spring.  Nothing new, just the same old stuff no one wanted.  That store is still sitting empty.  Fred Myers attitude was "We are the only retailer in town, take it or leave it".  Customer service was non-existant at both stores.

Then Wal-Mart came to town.  Wal-Mart built a new store, out in a new area, just outside of the old shopping areas.  Instant success, The big hole that was created by the closing of K-mart was filled, and then some.  Wal-Mart wanted to build a Super Wal-Mart store on the opposite side of town, again in an undeveloped area of town.  This time some people in the area decided they did not want the store there, so they got a big partition drive going.  Wal-Mart said we won't go where we are not welcome, and cancelled plans.

Wal-Mart added on to the existing store to make it a Super Store, again a big success.  The area around the Wal-Mart has sprung into development since the opening.  Home Depot, Lowes, Sportsman's Warehouse, Petco, Borders Books, Old Navy, Sports Authority, Chili's, Carl's Jr., McDonalds, several banks, Hotels, and loads of other businesses have built around the Wal-Mart store.  That area has become the new business and retail hub of Fairbanks.  Even Fred Myers built a new store directly across the street from Wal-Mart.  Now Customer Service is the name of the game in town.

The folks across town now realize how badly they screwed up.  All the businesses they had hoped to lure when rejecting Wal-Mart, changed their plans and built near Wal-Mart.  They could not understand that Wal-Mart was the determining factor in the other retailers deciding where to build.  The retailers were looking for the Wal-Mart overflow.

Up until Wal-mart came into town we had to order everything we wanted.  Clothes, and anything else we wanted came from Cabela's.  Still waiting for an Outback Steak House, and a Sea Food place like Red Lobster.  Fairbanks does not have a Sea Food Restaurant, not even a fast food place that sells sea food like Long John Silvers or Capt Ds.   The little sea food that is served in Fairbanks restaurants comes frozen from Sam's Club.  So you can guess at the quality.  And way over priced.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Like said, love them or hate them they do generate revenue from the tax the cities and towns collect from their sales along with the property tax and the business license tax's they pay.
Ad to that the other business ventures that open up around them is just that much more coming into the local government.
We had the situation in a small town just 14 miles from us.
We had the WalMart and they didn't want it.
Yet they all drove the 14 miles to shop at out store, spending their money in our town.
While here they also ate at our restaurants, bought their gas at our stations.
Sure there was the extra traffic but we managed.
A year and a half latter their town finally figured it out and now they have their own.
That's OK, we took their money while it was here!
Cut off their nose to spite their face mentality!!!

Yes, WalMart is a China goods outlet. So is every other store you shop. Don't believe me? Start reading the labels to see where everything is made today.

Compare any big chain retailer and they all have made in china tags. Walmart is not our enemy. We demand lower prices so goods are shipped in from overseas.  Prices will continue to rise until people stop buying. Walmart does employee people and pay taxes. There is good and evil in this.
