 I don't understand why my gun is marked model 98 and on H&R's web site it's states it's a model 498 could someone tell me why .

That's because yours is a model 098 that was made by H&R Inc who went out of business in 1986, the SB1-498 is a modern H&R made by H&R1871 which started business in late 1987, the model 098 was made from the early 1940s to early '80s IIRC, one of our H&R historians may offer some more info. The Model 098 TOPPER DELUXE was in production from 1974 - 1981, 20 ga or .410 bore; had a nickel finished receiver, and was the "deluxe" version of the more common Model 058.  It was equipped with a 26" barrel with set chokes and had a black stained or painted hardwood furniture set.  It was replaced in 1982 by the Model 099, 12, 16 or 20 ga and .410 bore, Walnut stained hardwood furniture; 25 to 28" barrels with fixed chokes and an "electroless nickel" finish.  Disc. in 1986.  Both have three piece takedown with a screw attached forearm.  Screw should have a single slot - after Marlin took over production of the SBs, the screw pitch was changed and there is a "double cross" headed screw in use - which is not interchangeable with earlier models.

I've readed your reply and the only thing that doesn't jive with what your telling me is,the SN starts with (HW) which means it was made in 2006 explain this to me.
