SB-1 or 2 frame fit .58 ?
« on: February 13, 2011, 08:43:52 AM »
And will the .58 cal. barrel fit a std SB-1 or 2 frame?
Im thinking if it does that I could chamber one to .577 Snider (basically .577 x 2").

I will do some fittin in the morn. I know on some of the fits there are issues but at this moment I'm confused as to which way does what so instead of giving you poor info I will just check in the morn for sure. Kurt

my huntsman with the fat firing pin sets off shotgun primers so maybe you could drill the snider cases? just a thought as it's something i've also cosidered doing.

Bubba, that is one way if Berdan primed is what you have for cases. A bunch of us Snider Lads are using Magtech 24ga. brass (got mine at Cabelas) cut down to length, annealed up top and run through the Snider die. That MT brass comes battery cup or Boxer primer, and they are real balloon head too!
The 'quick & dirty' route is to use 24ga. plastic hulls cut to length ( a HD sissors will do it) and stuffed up like a slug load with an open top. I get 3-4 reloads out of a hull before it gets ornery on me.

Blake I took and modified and split this topic I think we kind of hijacked the original poster and topic. I did do some fitting of a couple of old Huntsman bbls onto about 5 differant SB1's they were all loose and would need fitting but it can be done in my opinion. Problems arrise when you try and put newer bbl's on the old Huntsman frames. Kurt

Thanx for that, Kurt (split and all). Im sure the question of what the Huntsman barrels fit still is good to go for this forum. By the way its stated I assume the .58cal. are only on Huntsman barrels.
With my 'Snider' HB conicals muzzleloaded I think it would work out since the Snider conversions were on the British .577 (nom. 58ca.,) muskets with a slow twist too. Later versions made, not conversions, ended up with faster twists.
But.......my 'always a project around the next corner' mind jumped right into, 'what if' mode.
Any .58 is quite a thumper and my little Snider Cavalry Carbine is a beast (a cute little beast); a Handi version would be dandy.

I have my 58 barrel on a sb1 frame with the hubbard 209 plug. It locks up tight and shoots great.
