varmint loads in the 7mm-08 Handi
« on: February 17, 2011, 07:14:19 AM »
I was wondering if anyone has had any good experiences with the 7mm-08 barrel shooting 100gr varmint bullets or even the 120s.  I have read alot on here about the 7mm-08 shooting the heavier bullets well, but havent read much about the lighter ones.
It's all a hot mess...........

I do with the 7mm-08 as I do with all my rifles.  I find a load that shoots well and I use it for everything from chipmunks to bear.  Mine likes 140s, and that's its diet.  I just sight them in and learn the load and keep it there.  No elevation adjustment required.  I little hold over on the longer shots, but that's it.

I agree with Pete, I shoot Prvi 140gr 17.00 a box of 20  if I'm going to shoot pdogs and such. I barrel likes the 140's so thats what it eats.

The one I have shoot's Nosler 120's really sweet with a max load of Varget. It's kind of suprising as it's the only bullet so far that groups nice with a book max, under 1" at 100, haven't had a chance yet to go beyond 100 it's been just too darn cold since December for any shooting, but I expect it to continue at least par if not sub moa further out.

My 7-08 shoots a 120 Barnes TSX about the same as most bullets 1 1/4 - 1 1/2 inch groups at 100.  All run about the same as far as best groups in each bullet weight. Not a real tack driver for me but my 7-08 Handi is in the most dead game pictures of any gun I own with lots of "farthest shot" or "biggest buck" or "First MT Mulie". It is a great hunting rifle, I have killed the most with 130 gr bullets but like I said the 120's shoot as good.
I did use the 120 TSX to take a feral goat in TX this winter at 240 yds.  I don't think I could have hit a fox that far though....  thejanitor
