Guys,

After buying an Encore 50 cal muzzleloader this year, I have become hooked on the Encore system. Had the Bellm trigger job done, etc. I have decided to buy a rifle barrel for my Encore. I intend to use it mostly for deer, no shots likely over 200 yards. Can't decide between the 270 and 7mm-08. I do reload. I'd like to hear from anyone out there with experience with either or both of these two calibers in the Encore. I am not interested in going to a smaller caliber nor moving up to 30 caliber. What has worked for you? Any big advantage of one over the other in your opinion? Thanks!

Hello, I have had a 7mm-08 for 12 years. I love it......I use 140 Gr Nosler Ballistic tip bullets over IMR-4350 powder.......and it is very lethal to whitetails to 300 yards. It is my favorite rifle caliber for deer. Good luck.

Having taken deer with both the 7mm-08 and the 270 I will say they are both quite capable. I personally think the 7mm-08 is better suited to short action bolt guns. With the Encore and no action to deal with I would opt for the added powder capacity of the 270. Especially if your barrel length will be in the 24" to 26" range. The added barrel length and some slow burning powders will permit you extract a little more velocity from the 270. If you really like the 7mm you may wish to consider the 280 as it could give you the best of both worlds. If your barrel length will be 22" or less stay with the 7mm-08.

I currently load for a Ruger No. 1 in 270. The load of 55 gr of 4350 behind a 130 gr Combined Technologies(molycoated Nosler ballistic tip) bullet will shoot three bullets touching at 100 yds. As the barrell heats up it starts to vertically string the shots, but its a one shot/one deer gun. I thought the 7mm/08 was a lower velocity and lower pressure load but my cousin has taken several with that round at 200+ yds with no trouble.

Never been much of a 270 fan, no good reason . . . the caliber just does not appeal to me. But the 7m-08 is another matter. I think it is possibly the best whitetail caliber out there. I use the same load as Ciscoman14 and no problem shootin moa. My Encore has a 24" barrel. Eitherway, get a different recoil pad (like a Sims - made for the Encore). You will be glad you did.

WildWilly - The 7mm-08 is not low pressure ... it operates at the same pressures as all other cartridges based on the 308 or 30-06. It does have slightly lower velocity than the 270/280 class of cartridges because of the lesser powder volume of the 308 case (just like the 308 vs the 30-06).

As far as a cartridge to pick for an Encore, I'd go with the 7mm-08 or 280Rem personally. Better bullet selection than the 270 is just one reason. Either will be more than capable on deer out to 300yds.

I have a 7mm-08 Encore and love it. I took a small muley doe this season with it using 140 gr BT. and she only went 5 yards before expiring. I love the gun, and the only barrels I'll probably add are a ML, and a .25-06, and maybe a .300 WM.
