Had one once, asked for by a very regular member who was in a wheelchair. No one used it even him. It dried up and died. We have folks voting for it just to support you but from their comments I am sure they will NOT be users of it if opened. Too often this is how new forums happen here. Folks vote yes to support some esoteric forum one or two folks want and then it gets opened with twelve yes votes and no one uses it and I have to shut it back down.

What I need are NOT folks voting yes to support someone else's request but voting YES I WILL USE IT ONCE OPENED. If your yes isn't that kinda yes then you are doing the entire site a disservice voting at all.

Now haveing said that I'll probably give it a try one more time if the votes come in but if doesn't get used it's not going to stay. I feel we already have too many forums and I've taken to closing one most times I open another. That's likely to be the way it continues as we have too many forums now but more importantly too many not being used.

I have to admit that I doubt I would be a regular participant in the disabled forum. :-X

Bill....
Tho I am not disabled to the extent that I am in a wheel chair...I do have a permanent disability and I do understand some of the restrictions it challenges me and others with.
 My vote stands.
 Thanks, Ken

Oh we'll go with it I guess if the votes come in I just have serious doubts it will be used afterward but who knows. It has been my experience tho in ten years of running this site that if a forum fails the first time it's set up it doesn't do any better on subsequent attempts. As a for instance take a look at our supporting the troops forum. This is the THIRD time we've tried a forum for support of our troops. Each time it's had a different name and each time it got overwhelming support to be set up and each time no one cared to use it once in place. Same with the Land Management Forum we now have, this is the third go around for it too and still other than 3-4 folks no one seems to care about it.

I'd love to see an active forum for physically challenged hunters here, really I would. But I don't want to see any forums that get no use. Heck I'm close to qualifying myself these days and I suspect if I asked my doctor for help I'd get a handicap sticker/tag based on my shortness of breath issues, the doctors at UAB in B'ham told me I should be on oxygen 24 hours a day and I said ain't happening.

I've read enough of your responses to recognize you too have some limitations...I think, if the votes tally, I'll support this as a "new" forum...

Well, I'm not sure I'd like to see a "disabled forum."  Sounds like one has already been disabled.

I'd rather see a forum for PWDs (People With Disabilities). Lets try to get the terminolgy straight right off the bat.

With technology and medicine at its current level, we are able to keep people going to a much older age, to the point where plastic joints, walkers, and wheelchairs might become the norm. Soon, its not going to be a question of "if" we become disabled, its going to be a question of "when." Perhaps we could all benefit from a forum that deals with the needs of PWDs.

Even Greybeard himself talks about being restricted to a blind while doing the plantation hunt. Hell, that's perfect fodder for a forum for people with disabilities.

I say lets do it.

Yours truley,

Skunk

Rather than a "disabled" forum how about a "dealing with disabilities" forum.

Many of us  have some kind of disability such as eyesight, eye dominance, circulation, respiratory, weight, bad breath ;) etc.

I would not post in a disabled forum because I am not disabled, but I do have physical handicaps that I have had to deal with that I could comment on with experience.

That's a great idea, anyone over 50yrs of age is gonna be dealing with some sort of disability, most not so serious, but never the less, need to be dealt with.

I too would actually support this forum, as my grandpa is going through a dilema right now.  He is trying to get a doctors note to be able to get a crossbow instead of a regular bow (bad shoulder).  However i did not vote either way since i would maybe use it once, twice, or maybe even a third time just for him.

I'm not at all sure what the heck happened but it seems ALL the yes votes went away and there are only two no votes left. VERY STRANGE. Skunk, was the YES count 11 when you posted? Apparently some how after your post the yes count went to zero and I'm at a lost to explain it.

Greybeard, yes, the "yes" vote was at 11 for sure, which is why I commented on it.

The "no" vote was I think around 8, but I'm not positive. I was paying more attention to the "yes" side of things.

Very strange indeed that the count could go so far haywire from the time of your post until I saw it. Tell ya what I'm gonna do in light of the fact it was but one vote short, I'll go ahead and set it up based on that vote count.

BUT we need to decide and agree on a name for it. As I recall there was some early discussion about calling it a handicap forum. Anyone object to calling it Hunters and Outdoorsmen with Disabilities Forum? Or would the previously suggested Dealing with Dsabilities be more satisfactory? Matters not to me.

Graybeard, I fully agree with you - very strange indeed. And I can offer no explanation for why it happened.

I have been watching the count for this thread and it has had 11 yes votes for quite some time now. The only reason I posted to Dusty in the first place was because I wanted the original thread to bubble to the top again in hopes that someone who might not have seen the thread yet would read the new post and possibly cast the 12th and deciding vote.

As far as the name goes, I like your suggestion of, "Hunters and Outdoorsmen with Disabilities" best. The other suggested name is also good but it seems too narrow and inclusive, while your suggestion can include the topics of "Dealing with Disabilities" as well as many more fields of the subject.

Either way, I feel that this new forum will have a positive overall effect for GBO Forums.

OK it's been set up. I dropped it into the Hunting and Trapping Forums section down near the bottom between Youth Hunting Forum and Taxidermy Forum. The link to it is:

Am I a prophet er what? I said it wouldn't get used and sure enough after all these years it still hardly ever sees a post. Folks say they want these forums but just don't use them.

Sure you can. Just cuz no one else is doing so right now doesn't mean you can't. Heck it might even get someone else to read and post.
