Yipee, It's finally snowing
« on: February 20, 2011, 04:20:38 PM »
We are down half of our annual snowfall.  We have been needing snow for four months.  It started snowing this morning at about 7 AM here in North Pole.  We went to the Dog Races in Fairbanks this morning, it snowed the whole time we were there.  It made for hard mushing for the dogs, that new snow piling up made for hard pulling sleds.  Also poor footing.   I got bit by two dogs while holding  them back at the starting line.  Glad I had on heavy gloves.  Maree's dogs are just as sweet as can be, but when harnessed they get excited.  When at the starting gate they gt to jumping up and down.  They are barking like mad and sometimes start snapping at each other.  my right hand got in the way twice, ouch.

Saw lots of accidents on the way home.  Mostly people off the road in the snowbanks.  Did see a three car pileup, and just avoided being in it myself.  Trooper stopped to check out someone off the road.  Snow and Fog was heavy, add to that the exhaust from the cars and trucks that made a sudden area of poor visiability.  Trooper did not put out flares back up the road, he just turned his blue and red lights on.  Troopers have a bad habit of parking with the drivers side half way out in the traffic lane.  I was in front of a pack of vehicles.  I was traveling at 40mph in a 55 mile zone.  Being in the lead I was able to see the fog bank coming, and slowed down even more.  Then I saw the lights through the fog.  I hit the brakes and moved to the left lane, throwing up even more snow behind me.  I turned on my flashers, but appearently the cars behind me could not see them.

The car directly behind me suddely saw the Troopers lights and swerved to the left to avoid the Trooper car.  Someone else in an SUV, had gotten tired of going so slow and was in the process of passing.  SUV in the left lane went into the snow bank.  Car in the right lane hit the Trooper car.  Next car hit his brakes and went sideways hitting both the car and the SUV.  There was a gap in traffic, and the rest of the following vehicles were able to stop and not get involved.  Trooper had dove over the snow banks to get out of the way.  I stopped and walked back down there.  Everyone got out OK, no injuries, just three damaged vehicles.  Tow truck was in the group that was able to stop, he turned his lights on and was able to warn people coming up.

When I saw no one was hurt I got back in the KIA Sportage and left.  Michelle called Sky to warn him of the accident, thinking he was behind us..  We found out Sky had already passed the area.  He was just ahead of us, and had passed the Trooper sideways himself.  He said he did not see the flashing lights till he was too close to stop.  He swerved to avoid the Trooper car and went into a skid.  He corrected and hit the throttle pulling out of the skid.  Since he had not hit or been hit he went on towards home.  Sky will not make calls on his cell while driving, and before he could find a safe place to pull off the highway to call and warn us, his Mom had called him.

But with all this new snow, I'm going snow machining.  Life is always interesting here in Alaska.

So now that it has snowed in Alaska, does that mean we can quit worrying about global warming?

Oh man, 30 more inches over night.  Can't even get my plow out of the back yard.  Got to use the snow machine to break a trail to get the 4-wheeler with the plow out to the drive.  Use the one ton duelly to break a trail for the plow to get started.  Got a Ford Explorer stuck and abandoned in the street in front of my house over night.  I am taking a bunch of college kids in to UAF this morning with my big truck since their cars can not get out of the drive, or down their streets.  The man delivering the morning paper just stopped by for coffee, he said he has not seen a plow all morning.  So a bunch of people are stranded.  My S-10 and the nKIA Sportage won't go anywhere today.   Yall be good got to run.  Rog

Made it in to UAF and back.  One lane open all the way in.  4-wheel drive all the way.  First class for Sky and Thomas was held, but so many were unable to come in they canceled the rest of the classes for the day.  On the way back home the Mitchel Expressway that goes around the south side to Fairbanks was drifting over.  The big truck just kept busting through the drifts.  When I got to the Richardson Highway, the plows had been out and cleared both southbound lanes.  When I got to the Badger Rd overpass it had drifted shut already, in less than 20 minutes.  I busted through that and kept going.  Half way to North Pole the road became so drifted over it was down to one lane again.

When we got home Sky and I spent three hours plowing out the drive, and shoveling the porches.

I had used the snow machine to break trail and tow the 4-wheeler with the plow from the back yard out to the drive.  Sky went to put the snow machine back in the back yard.  He rode down the street and thought he would follow the power line cut, then take the trail through the woods, that ends in our back yard and be done.  Back there in the power line cut the snow was over 4 foot deep.  Fresh powder, no consistancy at all.  Snow machine started porposing on him.  Diving completely under the snow then busting out to the top, then diving again.  About the third time the snow knocked him off.  He climbed back on the machine and immediately got stuck.

I knew the smaller snow machine would not go back there so I just waded to where he was.  Snow came up to my waist, as I walked the trail that yesterday was packed hard enough you did not sink when walking it.  I carried a shovel when I walked back there, and Sky dug out about 4 feet behind the machine.  I got on and backed it up, then hit the throttle and it jumped back up on top.  I went to the house, Sky had to wade back.  4 feet of soft powder sure is pretty.  While shoveling the back porch Sky and I got to clowning around.  Sky shoved me off the porch and out into the deep snow.  I spread out and fell flat on my back.  Poof, down I went about two feet.  I lay there laughing, but when I went to roll over the snow would not let me roll over.  Every time I used my hands to try and push myself over, my hands just sunk.  I could not roll over, and with my bad back I could not sit up.  I was in a predicament.  Sky jumped out and gave me a hand so I could raise up and then stand.  Made me realize something little like that, falling on your back in 4 feet of snow could be hazardous.  Especially if you are out there alone.

More snow predicted later in the week.

Wow our big hazzards are don't leave a tool in the sun in the summer or you will burn your hand, wear a hat for some shade and you need to drink lots of water or you will dehydrate.

Of course when we got our 2 inches of snow there was the advisory to stay home. There were a few cars in the ditches. Those were the ones who didn't slow down.

We have those same rules,  Don't leave a tool outside, you will frostbite your hand sometimes through gloves when you pick it up.  Always wear a hat that will cover your ears, so they don't freeze.  Drink lots of water during the winter to prevent dehydration, the cold just sucks it right out of you.

I have always bought coats with hoods.  I seldom used them, but they were there if needed.  My son's friends have gotten to making fun of me for never using my hoods.  So as of late when I put on my coat I have been flipping the coat up on my shoulders.  That makes the hood flip up on my head, and I just leave it there.  Yesterday when Sky pushed me off the porch, I realized with the hood up I did not get snow down my back.  As it was it was just funny.  If all that snow had gotten down my back, it would have gone from funny to hurting cold real fast.  I would have had to stop what I was doing and come in to dry out and warm up real fast.  So we can learn from this younger generation.

Well I won't be getting the snow down the back of my coat anytime soon. 8)

I just think it is great getting reports from other parts of the world. We have some of the same rules but for different reasons. Hat for shade and hat for warmth.
Dehydration can be an issue anywhere.

I had a young engineer ask me for a set of work gloves one July. It wasn't becuase he was working with the crew, it was becuase he was from up north and his steering wheel was to hot to touch to drive home. I gave him the gloves and a sunshade for his car windshield. :)
He did say his next car would have airconditioning.

Haven't seen a car without A/C in years.  Even up here.

Just got back from a ride on the snow machine.  The area where I varmit hunt and call, (My old trap line) is on the other side of the Chena Flood Control Project.  It's eight miles long and two miles wide.  Had a hard time getting across, even with my machine with 24" track.  Machine kept porposeing and I was getting covered in snow.  Drifts were sometimes six foot deep.  No one had been out there to break trail.  When I got to the trail, it has had no travel on it either.  I changed my mind and turned around.  Snow was just too deep and travel too hard to do alone.  Coming back on the broke trail was easy.  I'll try again tomorrow afternoon.

Sourdough, the only way I can come close to relating to you, is that years ago I had a customer who made ice cream.  (I repair forklifts.)  He bought a new machine from us, to use in the hardening room, where it is -60 degrees.  The first day, it quit in the freezer and I had to go and get it out.

I asked for the bathroom when I got there, and a fellow told me to hold my water...I might need it.  I didn't know what he meant at the time but I soon learned.

The vinly seat on the lift was frozen, and since it has a switch in the seat, the  truck would not move.  I hit the seat with my elbow to make the switch, and the seat shattered like glass....

A whole new experience for me.

The car was a 75 ford pick up, it didnt have A/C. He worked himself through college and paid off his loans quickly. Anyways it doesn't get that cold here. Maybe down to 0 F occaisionally has been running 60-70 F this week so far.

This summer there will be spots in the parking lot if you stand still for a few minutes your shoes will stick.

Mechanic:  In 1974 my first wife and I moved from Miami Florida back to North Pole.  The day they delivered our households it was 50 below.  One of the guys knocked the stack of chairs for the Breakfast set over.  The vinyl shattered like glass on all the chairs.  Everything else made it OK.  When those chairs got reupholstered they were fabric.

My car and trucks are all either leather or fabric.  I will not buy anything with vinyl.  The vinyl they use for snowmachine seats is some tough stuff.  The Ski Doo Tundra I just sold I had riden for 15 years and the vinyl seat still looked just like it did the day I bought it.  I rode that thing down to 40 below.

Vinyl seats shattering, holy smokes. I am betting any pipe carrying liquid is at least 6 feet deep. Do you have to worry about gasoline gelling because of cold?
