Yay brass!
« on: March 01, 2011, 07:13:20 PM »
So I decided a couple of weeks ago that I would go ahead and prep all my brass so that I can load a few up whenever the mood strikes without.  I've sorted most of it and resized around 700rnds of .223, .30 carbine, 30-06, and .243.  I've probably got another 500+ of .223, 400+ of .243, somewhere around 1000rnds of .40 S&W, 2000rnds of .38spl, and 1000 or so of assorted other calibers.  What have I got myself into?!  I guess I just have to chip away at it as I can.  It will be nice once I'm done, though.

Ya know, I did that too when I got setup. It's fun playing with the new gear.
But I noticed neck tention changes as time passes, with most of it happening with-in and up too 72hrs. Brass has "Spring back", where it wants to return to it's original position after sizing.
I can feel the bullet seating pressure as it slides in the neck is different after a week as opposed to next day. I wash brass to remove case prep lube so I need to let'm dry, some times in the oven if I need them right away or just open air overnight if I'm not cramped for time.
There was a difference in accuracy with the cases loaded within 24hrs compared to the pre-prepped stuff. Not sure if it was run-out issues or not because I didn't have my gauge at the time, but there was a difference noted at the target. Now I try to load'm within 24 hours or sooner of prep.

That's with bottle neck rifle brass, pistol or straight wall rifle might be different, but I don't load those so I don't know.

I'd a went stir crazy last winter if it hadn't been for my reloading.  :P
An unusual amount of heavy snows for here. >:(

As a rule I do most in the winter for this reason.
I generally try and cast up an excess of bullets in the fall when it's still warm but not hot out.
I usually try and have  several thousand rounds just in case I need the therapy. ;D
