Spot and Stalk in the west...tips?
« on: March 20, 2011, 06:20:06 PM »
Well, I got the "perfect" load worked up in my rifle for some bear hunting next month.  Never attempted the spot and stalk thing and was hoping to get some advice from you folks that know a little something on the subject.  Any tips will be greatly appreciated.

Get out early, real early. Use good glass. Watch the meadows, they're often after grass in the spring. Also after winter-kill deer carcasses.

If it's hot, take a nap mid-day, then be out again from say mid/late afternoon until dark. Glass until you can't see anymore, but be wary of taking a shot if it's about to get full dark - unless you want to track a wounded bear into a thicket at night...

Best of luck, it can be a lot of fun. Where are you headed?

wind, wind and wind you have to be really aware of the wind while stalking a bear they will wind you a mile away and be gone in a second.  In my experience with black bear they are more skiddish than elk and deer and will definitely not hesitate to run.
