Stainless SB2
« on: February 24, 2011, 01:26:55 AM »
Question for the experts out there.  I have a 243 Ultralight that my 9 yr old uses for deer.  It is great for the small framed hunter because it only has a 20 inch barrel and is a lot easier for him to handle and balance.  My question is, are these SB2 frames actually stainless or are they nickel plated? I picked it up about 4 years ago at a show at and can't really tell. It really does look nice.

Thanks.

Have you tried putting a magnet to it?

Never thought of it.  Will try.

I have to apologize for putting this question in the wrong spot. I did not realize I was in classifieds.  My mistake, please move.

A magnet will stick to a stainless steel firearm.  This is due to the higher amount of carbon left in the steel.  I can stick a magnet to my ss rifles anyway.  According to the H&R website the 45-70 ultra hunter is the first ever stainless reciever made by them.

Thanks for the move Tim.  I will have to be more careful next time.  I would still like more info on these receivers if anyone knows about them.

If the frame was made before 2008, it's matte nickel, as marine said, the only SS H&R frame they've ever made comes on the 45-70 and 444 Ultra Hunters. Stainless used in firearms has magnetic qualities. FWIW, my SS Ultra Hunter has a blued barrel release, my matte nickel frames have nickel barrel releases, dunno if that's definitive for all tho.

Thanks, very interesting.  Now if I could only get my little guy to sit still in the woods long enough to use the thing.  He's a bit too fidgety but still fun to take.

378, Don't know if you tried this but my grandson sat with me a bit last fall in Wisconsin and I put up my Ground Max hub blind (77" square) and we sat and he moved around and we still saw deer.

Who knows, might be worth a try. Glad to see you take your kid hunting.

Buy him a Nintendo DS and a set of ear phones, he will sit still for hours.   Larry
