caliber adapter .223/22 mag
« on: February 24, 2011, 12:56:41 AM »
I got a H&R .223, I also have a 22lr bolt gun. I am thinking going with a in between round, the 22mag.  Since I do not know how it would shoot, plus I can handload .223's which is less expensive then the 22mag rounds.  So why would I want a 22mag? Why not.  To save money, I found an ad for multi caliber adapters.  It will cost ~20 bucks.  The rifle was produce in 2000,  I believe the twist is 1-12 as it will not shoot bullets over 55 grain as well as under 55 grain.  So this may be a good match.  Has anybody ever used this combo?  Or should I just save my pennies and pony up to a 22 mag?

Thank you,
Joe

I have a 22 hornet/223 adaptor and it's a pain to remove spent shells and accuracy is mediocre at best.
I would sai it's ok as a survival situation but not the best. Maybe you will have better luck.

I have seen them. They are more intricate than the one I described, but they do exist.
They are more of a capsule. The entire bullet goes inside and the rear portion screws on. It is the firing pin. The CF firing pinhits it, it inturn hits rim of bullet enclosed within.

I have both 22lr and 22mag adaptor for my 223. They look like spent 223 cases. The work great. Slow to reload but work. My swith is 1/9 and I can hit what I aim at but not going to win any awards.

You probably dont need a mediocre shooting 22Mag, nor an 'in between round' because you can handload 22Mag equivelents in the .223 cases. Spend the $20ish on more reloading components!
(and start saving up for a nice big-bore so the .223 becomes the 'in between round')  ;)

I agree with gcrank.  Load 40-45 grain .224 bullets over Trailboss powder (see the Hogdon website for load information), and you will have a bullet that gives you 22 magnum performance (about 1900 fps).  It will also be much more accurate and more convenient than an adaptor.  I've been playing with Trailboss in my 223, and I am very surprised at the accuracy that I am getting (0.5" to 0.8" at 50 yards).

FWIW, years back I decided I wanted to "upgrade" to a 22mag bolt from my 22lr rifle.
All I noticed was a louder bang and more expensive ammo. Unless it's a windless day and your planning to shoot a .22 rimfire more than 100 yards, at least for me, there was no real gain with the .22 mag.

The 22 Mag is a definite step up from a 22lr, and very effective. The cost of ammo is less than the 223 even reloaded, and not everyone reloads. The bulk and weight of the ammo makes quite a difference also in many situations. I used to think the 22 mag was a useless round, but have since found it to be one of the most practical. Ammo can be found almost anywhere, the rifles and scopes for it are cheaper, it is much less likely to attract attention , especially of the unwanted variety. In the past, as a farm/ truck gun it is great. It is much better than a 22LR on wood chuck to coyote size game. If you reload and already have a 223 or Hornet, I would not run out and buy a 22 Mag, but if you do not reload etc I highly recommend the little cartridge, it is handy as a pocket on a shirt.
