any 30 30 loads using the 165 gr Nosler btbt
« on: March 01, 2011, 09:03:59 AM »
Wanting to try a new load for the Handi 30 30. I can't find anything for this Nosler 165 gr. Bal tip Boat tail. Anyone out there tried this? I am partial to Varget and H 4895 in the 30 30.  Actually I can't find any listing for the 165 gr. Jkt. bullet. If you have something I might like, please let me know. I started to load some using 29 t0 30 grs of Varget for starters. But I will wait for your input.

                                         Thanks               Jim    <")))><

You could use 170 gr bullet data and ease up a little at a time on the powder and watch for pressure signs. I know that J.D. Jones suggests that the 165 ballistic tip is the best bullet for longer ranges out of his 309 JDJ Contender pistol barrels. It will push that bullet 2200 fps muzzle velocity and J.D says that it will give positive expansion on game at 300 yards. I just checked my new Hodgdon loading manual and they list the max load with 170 gr bullets with Varget as 33.0 grs for 2167 fps from a 24" barrel. They list for 150 gr bullets 34.5 grs Varget so if you do the math you should be able to go to 33.5 grs Varget with 165 gr bullets. You need to work up to these weights though.
