44 mag- Marlin 1894 or Rossi M92?
« on: April 24, 2011, 04:40:23 AM »
Been thinking about getting a levergun in 44 mag and it looks like the Marlin 1894 and the Rossi M93 are the two to choose between.

I really like the 24" octagon barrel on the Rossi.  It also seems to have a better rate of twist for the heavier bullets.  Some fols on this site have posted that they are really happy with their Rossis, other reviews have been spotty.

Marlin only offers a 44 mag octagon barrel in their cowboy version, which I like but I'm not sure its worth the extra coin.  I own a couple of Marlins and have been very happy with their quality and accuracy.

Rifle will be for informal target shooting and whitetails.  I do reload and cast.

The three biggest issues are:
1) Accuracy
2)Accuracy
3)Quality Control.

How do these rifles compare?

I have both the marlin is late 70's the rossi is around 2005, I am a big Marlin fan as most of my rifles are marlins, but I really like my rossi 44. As far as accuracy go's with iron sights I'm good to about 75 yrds.[older eyes] with the scope on the marlin I can hold about a 4" group at 150yrds. I've had no issues with eather one.
an unloaded wepon is equal to the same mass and volume as a rock.

Thanks for the reply.  I have a Marlin 336 in 30-30, now I'm looking for the next project.  Really like making accuracy projects out of these guns, thinking the .44 mentioned or maybe a .357.  Thanks again, Matt.

If it is a newer make of Rossi then you should have decent quality in the rifle.    However if it is 1980-early 1990s vintage of Rossi steer clear.    I  have had two of them that were junk.    Using factory 44 mag loads they just started coming apart.       You can't go wrong with the durabiltiy of the Marlin.

I just picked up my new M92 44 magnum a couple of weeks ago and haven't even shot it yet. I wish I could give you some feedback on it. I can tell you it's a neat  and handy looking little carbine. Charlie

My eyes demand a scope so I went for the Marlins, 1894C and 1894 44Mag. I had wanted another
1894C so the wife and I could shoot from the same box of ammo. I couldn't find one at the time
and "settled" for the 44. I love it, haven't shot it much due to the crummy weather in Oregon, but
it really shoots! It had a feeding problem when I got it, Marlin took care of it in short order. Marlin,
made here in the US, gotta love that part of the equation!

If you intend to shoot heavy for caliber bullets, you might do better with the Rossi 92 if it has a faster twist then the Marlin.  The 1894 action is also sensitive to OAL when it comes to feeding, more so then the 92 style action.  Scope mounting favors the 1894's solid top receiver, if that is a consideration.
