Yankee or Hick i just don't get it.
« on: February 03, 2011, 11:51:52 AM »
I was born in new jersey in '50 until my folks moved back to CT in '60.  I lived in a city here until i got married and moved more north to a small town.  I was there until 6 years ago and moved about 25 minutes to the north again to a smaller rural town with more farms.  I'm in the country now.  Remember now i'm just a kid from jersey.  I went out one morning to the local deli/gas stop because they have better sausage/egg sandwiches than i can make.  I wore my boots, my camo pants and an old shirt.  I'm trying to just blend in to my new surroundings right.  There were a few state workers taking a break sitting near the door.  As i walked by one of then said under his breath here's a hick.  I got the yankee's fooled that i'm a country boy/ hick...I had to laugh.  I guess withy the right clothes we can blend in anywhere.  Yankee's,  hicks, rednecks who really cares were all one people.  I know the war still has deep wounds.

The more i lean about that stupid war the more it makes me sick.  When the war happened my people were in italy building boats and smashing grapes with there feet. Remember i'm just a kid from jersey trying to blend in..... 8)

Down here dressed like that and driving an old beatup pickup would get you called "Redneck." I relish the title every time its used in my direction. I'm a country boy and damn proud of it. My friends are my friends, black or white male or female, we except eachother as who we are and they can call on me til the day I die.

+1 Ga.windbreak.

In my opinion a redneck is the first to enlist, the first to stand up for what is right, the first to protect his homeland, the first to help his neighbor. The last to whine about life being unfair.

You want to meet some laid back and wise country folks---go to any cafe in W Texas or New Mexico. Those boys got it all in perspective.

Jeff Foxworthy gave a good definetion of a "redneck". Its a "glorious absence of suficiation". And it's not subject to geographical boundaries.

The places in this country where you will find a person that's as good as their word
are getting few and far between. I find rural people (rednecks or hicks if you will)
have a better grasp of what's going on than the citified zombies that get all their
news from TV, slanted one way or the other. I am moving home to the sticks of
eastern Oregon, small town of less than 300 soon and will spend the rest of my
life with people I can identify with and trust...redneck farmers.

Bill, I freely admit to being a redneck. And I've never been without a job since I was 16. Before that my dad saw that I had plenty to do to teach me how to work.

I do miss ole Jerry, he was funny.

I too am a refugee redneck from nu joisey.  I got out of there at 18 and only went back to visit mom and family.  I worked on dairy farms in upstate NY,  spent 7 years in the Navy, lived in Florida for 14 and now live on my own 120 acres on Da U.P of Michigan......and I'm a redneck.  Wearing cammos, bibs and coveralls.  I raise chickens, cattle, horses and dogs.  I drive two 4 wheel drive pickups and I'm a conservative Republican, owning many guns......and yes.....by and large, my neighbors are the best folks I've ever met; many of whom are Amish and Mennonites.  People here still get together and build a barn for a neighbor in a weekend and have fun and good food doing it. It's a lot different than not knowing your next door neighbor in the city.

Tennhillbilly, the reason we drag old outhouses out on the ice to fish from is because it takes too long to chop a hole in the ice for the boat.    ;D  See, we aint so dumb.

One year in the winter when the ice was on the lakes/ponds here i went and purchased all the ice fishing gear and went ice fishing.  I had no outhouse to sit in but just a box that i put all my gear in to sit on.  My sons drilled the holes while i put those things they call "tip-ups" in each hole with live minnows.  I froze the whole time and caught nothing.

I went to work the next day and asked my co-workers who ice fish how do they catch fish?  He told me they bring a grill, meat, booze and beer to drink and eat the whole time, the heck with fishing.  So its like tailgating on an ice cube?  Heck i can stay home, put the tip ups on the front lawn in the snow and move the cooler/grill closer to the woodstove and sit in my skibby's and eat and drink and be warm too, while i watch the tip up's from inside the house.  I'm confused now as what goes on in those outhouses??? Those must be the portable hot tubs but ain't the water cold when they drill the larger holes in the ice?  I'm from Jersey what the heck do i know.

In the spring in VT they shoot the northern pike with M1 garands.  The artical was in one of those field & stream mags.  Is it fishing or hunting?  Its a sport up there.  I'm trying to just blend in but its hard too do.

Its funny the farther we go north how much the outside sports really change.   I have no clue as to what they do in Canada nor do i want to know.

No we need the boat with the hole in it for the winter time so we can chop the ice from inside the boat.  Since it has the hole in it to ice fish we can't use it in the summer when there is no ice.  This is why we see so many boats in the yankee's back yards. The boat is only good till the ice is on then we chop the hole it so next year we need another boat.  ;D  I just couldn't pass that one up.....we ain't so bumd are we? . ::)
