What is the best non sabot bullet for an inline?
« on: February 21, 2011, 10:24:03 AM »
In Colorado where I live and hunt you can't use sabots. So I am fishing to see what people think is the best bullet without a sabot. I use powerbelts 295 Gr. Does anybody else have something better?  :) ???

Powerbelts shoot great for me but by far the best conical IMO is the Thor bullet. I run the .500" sized Thor in all our CVA's and they 99% of the time are what i hunt with.

I hadn't heard of thors before. So how did you determine the diameter did you mic the barrel? I have an encore prohunter. I'am having issues with accuracy. So I was looking at trying different bullets just for kicks.

well i am glad you told me what gun you have.  TC's arent known for shooting conicals, TC doesnt even recommend them in their rifles at all.

You could try the 300-350gr Hornady FPB and see how that goes, if those dont shoot, time to buy a muzzle loader that will shoot conicals.

I shoot powerbelts out of my Encore and they shoot great. It doesn't matter what weight of bullet. Now my dad had a Pro Hunter that wouldn't shoot anything very good. He talked to T/C sent his barrel in and a few weeks later they sent him a new barrel. They never said anything was wrong but must have been or they wouldn't have sent a new barrel.  It shoots just as good as mine with anything that he puts down it. So if you try several different conicals and have they same results that you don't like talk to T/C. I don't agree that T/C 's don't shoot conicals. I also live and hunt in Colorado so sabots are not an option.

We have the same conical rule here in Idaho although ours is a little more restrictive, we have to use a lead conical.

I think you might have a couple options... One, being the Hornady FPB and Two, the Thors all copper bullet.  With the Thor you will have to find the one that fits your bore best.  The FPB's will need to be started with a good rap on a short starter and the npushed home with the ram rod.

Another option and the one I use during a ML is a .503-460 grain Bull Shop lead conical...  This is an absolute elk stopper...

Problem being that not all TC guns will shoot a lead conical because of a mis-aligned QLA.  My Triumph and Omega both do shoot them very well but others do not.

It would be my suggestion to try the FPB's as they are less expensive, either the 300 grain or the 350, especially if you are going after elk.  It has been reported that the 350's are more accurate, but I have no way of proving that as I have not shot them....

Now the outside possibilty.... Lehigh Bullets will possibly be making a sabotless bullet this summer that would be a great answer for you.  I am shooting some now and they are extremely accurate.

This is the test bullet, and I think Dave will work them into production this summer.  They are 50 cal - 270 grain.

Here is one of my shooting trips with this bullet...

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - they are a blast....

Thanks for all the input. There is alot more selection than i knew about for bullets I think I might try the hornady FPB's. I might have to send my barrel back to T/C I don't think it should be this hard to get it to shoot accurate. I'm just trying to get it to land on the paper at 100 yds.

Ubetcha, the No Excuse is an excellent bullet.  Dave really does do a good job producing and getting thos bullets out the people.  The only reason I prefer Dan's (Bull Shops) - he will size them to your bore, since all bores are not created equal...  And the lube that Bull Shop uses seems to be more stable in the different temperatures.

ACTUALLY - I think the No Excuse and Bull Shop are cast from the same mould, built my Mountain Moulds right here in Idaho...

In fact Dan calls his variety bullet a MT NEx and then does Dave change the NEx to No Excuse.  I have both and when you stand them up side by side with each other they look the same.

No doubt about it they are very good conicals......
