Crappie are biting on the pond

Caught 21 friday evening, 4 sat. 14 sun. and 8 today ;D Catching them all on crickets. Gonna pick up some shiners tomorrow and see if they work any better. Anyone else fishing for crappie?

There is no such thing as crappie they are called sackalay! Not spelled in French but that way a non cajun will be able to say it!!!!!

Zack, I am fully aware of what white perch is called down here but I use a term everyone will understand without a translator ;D. They biting down there? Gonna try to hit Darbone (sp)  creek below claibourne  this weekend.

We try to keep the sackalay out of the local ponds. Right they are the best eating but they eat EVERY THING IN A POND!!! I know of a few places on Weeks Island where you can catch hand sized on shiners late in the evening before dark but that is not fished but by Workers or old retires like me. Good luck and leave a few for seed.

Yep,they're biting in central NC.Going again today. Jigs and minnows.First they're finnin' then they're fryin'. Some of the bigger fish have already spawned once.HAPPY FISHIN'!

You're right about them taking over. Several years ago people would come over to catch 'em to stock other ponds.Was so overstocked we weren't catching anything but 3 to 4 inch crappie.  Finally convinced daddy to let us stock some 1/2 pound bass. Now we have a better balance of cat, bream, bass and crappie.

The water where I fish is a bit to cold yet, but it won't be long. Maybe another week or two. Fishing for crappie and big bluegill in the spring is my favorite time of the year to fish. Nottin better than fresh caught crappie and bluegill caught in the spring when the water is still cool. I just think they taste better in the spring than later in the year.

Have caught a few (sacalait) down here in the deep south, I live on a bayou that drains into False River, an oxbow lake, but the fishing has been a little slow.

The Mississippi River is coming up fast and has flooded the Atchafalaya Basin, good for the crawfish but not so good for the sacalait. The basin is a hot spot for fresh water fishing in south Louisiana.
