Finally broke the dry spell
« on: February 06, 2011, 07:00:59 AM »
Me and my bud went out to make a "Silent Stand" yesterday Morning.  Silent stands are stands where you stay at for up to a few hours starting at daylight and call ever so sparingly.  I will give out a challenge howl at first light and do nothing else for about 30 minutes.  Then I will call with distress sounds for maybe 15-30 seconds and do nothing else for another 30 minutes.  I have found this tactic works well during the mating season.  They will stalk to the sound using available cover.

Anyways, my bud was in a diferent spot and I all of the sudden here his 22-250 ring out.  He lets me know that he just connected with one, but its flopping violently.  I get my stuff together and head over that way.  I couldnt believe it.  This guy connected and crippled this female with a 450yd on the mark (lasered) shot with 45gr JHP!! He did have to give her a finishing shot though.  Quite impressive.  He of course was happy with it. ;D

Very good shooting.

Is that from the Win White box ammo?

That's a pretty good distance. Does he remember how much holdover?

Scope & Reticle?  Where did he hit her?

Bet he's Happy about that. I would be ;D

It was kind of a half a$$ hale mary.  Wind was left to right and the dog was broadside facing left.  He said that he held ot the top of her head (drop and drift).  Yes, it was white box ammo.  Weapon was an interarms model X and the scope was a basic walmart special.

I wanted to get out early this morning but had it in my back. Plan was to go out for a while then come home and try to work up a load for the 6-284 that I picked up at the Lima gun show yesterday. I haven`t killed any this year yet eather. Got 3 last fall, but haven`t seen any since the first of the year. Keep killing them.

450 yards, holy smokes.

I made a few sits early in the season with my 9mm carbine, they circled me at 200 yards but wouldn't come in.

I hope to get out with the .223 once or twice before the season ends in two weeks.

We (the Sister-in-laws Brother) and I scratched down a couple weekend before last near the Cerra Gordo area which is east of Decatur with him shooting & me calling.
Was mighty cold with a lot of snow mixed with ice and both the yotes came in quickly.

The snow has been on forever here and I have been ignoring the local pack which is seven or eight strong. I save these for friends or relatives as my closest calling site is within 150yds. The "takers" for my offers to get a shot at a Coyote have been very light this year and the Coyotes have responded by coming into my back yard for some rabbit hunting around the shed so I need to teach them some respect.

I measured the packs numbers on at least two occasions when I found that they were coming real close to the house, on that second trip I saw that they were following my tracks to an extent and wondered if they were smelling the Scent of the Wifes lap dog on my shoes?

Swift One: I prob passed real close to your place last Sunday on a trip to Marshal. When we got to that stretch of route 133 from Arcola to Paris the snow told the same old story of the straight line tracks out in the wide open converging on most of the single farmsteads, or even small towns and then fanning back out into the wide open again. If you can secure permissions within 10-15 miles to your north west, you could probably get into a bunch of them. The weather broke last Sat as you know so our slushy ice is going to give way to mud which is not good.

You guys have a coyote season?Ours is open year round

It's open October to April, it's the longest season we have. I think we have a stable population in most parts of the state so they want to keep them in check but not wipe them out entirely.

There was a time when they were actually worth something so they were a bit of a commodity.

I'm afraid the $40 on the carcass days are probably gone though. When I was 16 I sold a couple one deer season and made almost 200 bucks. I took one in not to long ago and he only gave me 5 bucks.

The only thing we have unlimited season on is Hogs, wood chucks, and red squirrel.

There is no way to wipe out a yote population. Shoot them anytime as far as I care. Who makes these laws anyway?  :o As for me I have been calling for a long time and never saw one while calling. Never shot one but hit one with a bow.

We have a guy on one of our better properties that trapped it for the first time since i have been hunting it.  He took 6 or 7 dogs off the lot and me and my bud were worried that it may have hurt the population.  However, when December rolled around, we saw nothing but coyote tracks on the property. I think you would have to do ALOT to competely remove a coyote population.  Someone once told me that when humans are long gone off the planet, cockroaches and coyotes will still be walking around....lol...
