You won't believe this but I know a guy that has a new 358 BLR that wants to trade even up for my 15 yr Marlin 336c 30-30. He is bringing it over to shoot this afternoon. He said the 358 just kicks to much and it's hard to find ammo.
I reload for all my arms. If I trade I'dgive him my 30-30 dies to offset having to get a set for the 358. I only have hunted deer here in Michigan but the 358 might be nice to try in the thick stuff upin the upper penninsula. My brother always invites me to go elk hunting but have never gone, so maybe the 358 might be a good trade? I know the BLR costs 2 x more so it is hard to think about passing it up. I can live w/o the 30-30 but want to always have a lever action. Whatcha Think?

I say go for it.

If you don't like it you can sell it and buy another 336 and have cash left over for other things.

Make the trade and then move and change your phone number and name so that he can't find you to try and get it back :wink: .
358 is aces, especially if you reload. You can make cases from 308s or buy 358s, you can shoot cast bullets, 357 pistol bullets or 358 rifle bullets. Yes, It does kick with max loads over 250 grain bullets, but with 200 grainers it's no worse than a 30-06.

As long as the guy knows what he's doing making such a trade. Taking advantage of someone's ignorance won't help you in the long run. But if he insists, even knowing that he's down, you would be stupid not to take the trade. If for no other reason than you could then come our cash ahead and get another .30-30.

Re-read Graycg. After getting the BLR, you'll never worry about wanting another 30-30 ever again. Such silly thoughts will be banished forever. The problem is that then you start thinking "should I look for a .223 or 22-250, a 7-08 or 257 Roberts, wonder what the new .450 is like...", then your bolt guns start disappearing and...

Those kinds of deals don't happen often, grab and run is the order of the day.

I know a guy that traded a 30-30 for a 458 Win mag in a model 70. The same reason, recoil!

Well,thank you all for the advice. I did the trade. The guy I traded with really liked my 30-30. It's accurate and he could shoot it well with the 2.5 x fixed power scope. I also gave him my dies and plenty of reloads. He also gave me a box and a half of factory loads. The 358 has only had 10 rounds through it. I didn't have the heart to ask for any cash to buy a set of dies. I'm planning on putting a Leupold QR fixed base on the BLR and putting a low profile scope on er. I'll use (Bertha) for deer next year after I've had all winter to develope a load.

Lee dies will be fine for your needs, even expanding 308 to 358. Mailorder, they are too cheap. 3x to 4x scopes are all you will ever need. Anything more just makes the rifle more ungainly to handle. Might look at the Burris Compacts or the Weaver K's. If you can't see it well enough for a clean shot with a 4x, you're beyond 358 range anyway. After handling it a little, I believe you'll start thinking "Betsy" rather than "Bertha". BOL.

Man you'll lose your shirt if you go through with that trade. Tell ya what I'll do tell him to get in touch with me . I have a 30 30 nice gun clean dies, 300 or so bullets, brass about 250, I'll throw in primers, power, and the 150 loaded rounds. Oh I got 2 shirts is the only reason I'll bail ya out.
