Thinking about a PF-9
« on: February 16, 2011, 07:27:07 AM »
Today I stopped into the local gun shop for reloading supplies, This shop amazes me at his prices, he is out in the sticks, but he has a new Kel-tec PF-9 blued for $249.00. I came home did some checking and that’s a pretty good price.
I own several handguns, but no Kel-tec. I have read a lot of good things about them.
My only concern, the one at the gun shop has a flush mount magazine. The ones I have seen on forms have the extended grip piece on the magazine. Could this be an early model, or do the blued models come this way, and where would be a good place to buy the extended magazines. My hands are on the big side. I need a little more to hold onto. Thanks.

If it's a new gun it comes with an extended base plate ready to install on the mag if you like. I use mine and it helps. They are available from Kel Tec on line if you need one.

Another thing to check is if it has a steel magazine release.  If it does then it's the most current version.  That's a really great price on a brand new one.  Around here they're on the shelves for $300 new for a blued one.

I bought mine used for $300, but it's stainless and came with a couple extra mags.  The guy said it only had 70 rounds through it and since then I've put about another 300 rounds.  It's functioned flawlessly for me and is more accurate than I was expecting it to be.  I have no complaints about the one I have, but the round count is still pretty low all things considered.

That's not stainless it's Hard Chrome, unless someone had it custom done. Savage is correct in that the "Pinky Extentions" come free with the purchase of a new PF-9. They are very easy to put on. If you look at the base plate of the magazine you'll see a hole in it's center with a spring loaded pin in it. You use a thin object to compress the pin and the base plate will then slide off. The extention then slides on untill the pin pops up in the hole locking it in place. An easy way to tell if one has the newer metal mag releases is that the metal ones have concentric circles on the surface. The older plastic ones have small nubs. $300 is average price with some as low as $250 and others as high as $350.  The frames come in Black, OD Green, Grey and what they call Wallet Brown. The slides in Matte Blue, Parkerized and Hard Chrome. Matte Blue the least expensive and Hard Chrome the most. Besides the upgrade to the metal mag release they also lenthened the feeding ramp at the breech of the barrel to give more reliable feed with a variety of ammo. Also they made some improvements on how the springs are held in place. Kel Tec has one of the best service departments you'll find anywhere. If you send a firearm back to them for any reason they'll usually send it back to you completely gone through and "Fluffed & Buffed" free of charge. The PF-9 is a breeze to conceal. It can easily be hid under a t shirt with the right holster or belt clip. They are reliable and very accurate as well. One word of warning. While recoil is quite managable for most, they are not what is refered to as a "range gun". In other words you'll not likely want to shoot a lot of rounds in a row through it before your hand tells you enough. However the PF-9 is not meant to be shot for fun. It is a serious conceal carry firearm designed to do a job and which does that job in all respects quite well; ease of concealment, accurate, reliable, light weight, and packing a lethal round for self defense.  I never leave home without mine!

Here's mine with it's little brother the P-32. Both in Fobus Evolution 2 holsters;
