Now I aint never shot a 22 mag to compare against, but I can tell you how my 17 does. Mine is a 14" contender barrel. It will shot groups about 1/2 to 3/4 inch at 100 yards. I don't know exactly because I never measure, I just looked at it and say good group. But all five shots will stay in a 1" orange dot easily.

I have never shot anything with it so I do not know about killing power. Was always going to try some head shots on squirrels last fall but kept bowhunting instead. Think I am going to give up the bow next year and enjoy the woods more squirrel hunting instead of sitting in a tree all the time.

I recently considered buying a 22 mag barrel but changed my mind since the ballastics (energy) are not that much different and I know the 17 shoots great. Good luck if you try one, I think it is a blast to play around with.

Ditto to Bullseye, Put a 4.5x14x40 rifle scope on mine and am getting ready to take it with me prarie dogin this year. If I can find some more ammo in time. This ammo shortage sucks. KN

Chris the velocity from my 6.5" Taurus Tracker runs 2060 fps. Been getting 1-2" open sighted groups at 50 yards. I haven't used it for hunting yet.

Well, the .22WMR from a revolver probably can't match the .17's velocity. About the best I've seen is the 30gr CCI Maxi-Mag +V or the Federal 30gr jhp's which will alleged do 2200 fps from a rifle.

As far as killing power, I have killed a lot of stuff with a .22 mag rifle and have concluded that it is very effective. I have killed some stuff with a .22 mag revolver and concluded the same thing. I would add the caveat on the revolver that all of my shots on live game or varmints has been less than 30 yards. Some a lot less.

There are also great variety in .22 mag ammo, from the relatively slow 50gr rounds best used on small edible game to high velocity jacketed rounds that will tear a wicked hole in varmints. Those who are dissatisfied with the performance of their .17's may be the victims of a poor selection of bullets on the gunshop shelf.

fyi, i saw the local gun shop has cci 17 hmr ammo on the shelf. doesnt have the ballistic tip; i think they are hollow points. $11 a box.

I picked up a box (the only one they have got so far) of the CCI today. It uses a Speer 17gr TNT JHP. Haven't got to shoot them yet but I'll report when I do. KN

I`m not much of a hand gun person, but I do a lot of long gun shooting. I just recently purchased a 17cal Ruger. Right out of the box I took it down and floated the barrel replace the trigger with a timney unit. Toped it off with a New BSA mil dot scope. I broke it in firing a little over 200 shots over a week and a half. At 70 yards with out any wind, its not a problem to put 3 rounds into a circle the size of a dime.

I took it out for the first time squirrel hunting today. I was late getting in but still got three. All three shots were made between 60 to 70 yards and all three were head shots. With out being too graphic, I`ll say this, there was only about 25% of the little fellows heads left. There is no way this round is suitable for body shooting squirrels, way too destructive. Will I keep using it to squirrel hunt? Absolutly, I love it. I am fortunate enough to be able to stay in practice, so head shots off a rest is not a problem. Can`t wait to try it on something else.

The bullet I`m using is the Hornady 17 cal V Max. They are about eleven bucks a box at Wal Mart. I have a friend that can buy them by the case for about eight fifty a box, so we split a case at a time.

The 17 is an awesome little round out of a long gun.

I have a S&W 647 with 8 1/2" barrel, I put a Nikon Monarch 2.8-8X28 scope on it but have found since that I could have gotten by with a straight 4X scope. I just went squirrel hunting a couple of days ago with it for the first time, forgot my ear plugs as I never wear them hunting,BIG MISTAKE, :eek: but I was having too much fun so I continued, got three that day. I am not steady enough with the pistol for head shots so I opted for a lung type shot and it worked out OK, looked like a miniature deer kill. This little round will act on small game the same way a large caliber rifle does on large game. Can't wait for better weather here so I can bench it really well and shoot some distance. I decided to get the more expensive pistol because lately I have decided to buy equipment that I can leave for my Grand Children and hopfully it won't depreciate in value over the years.

I've been looking at getting a S&W 647 but have been waffling on it lately. I was also looking at the Taurus Tracker in .17 but seen a few complaints about Taurus on here lately.

Can any of you 647 owners give some reviews for me? I've read a few magazine reviews and they all have been pretty good.

I shot the 647 offhand the first 6 rounds just to see the group that I could achieve and it was pretty impressive at 25 yards. I was going to scope it and was going to have to remove the rear sight. The handgun base that Leupold offers for the S&W that are predrilled will not work on this model for some reason. I called Leupold and they couldn't find the 647 in any of their publications. I had to use the Weaver style base that S&W offers. I don't like it as well as the dual dovetail type but it was all that I could find that would work. Hopefully Leupold will come up with a base that will work soon. The base that they have now works on all K,L,M frame S&W models but not the 647?

?? Don't know what happened. I also called S&W but only got to talk to a book worm who was no help at all. Not aware of any recent reviews right now, maybe when a few more of the pistols get played with..

Stickynote, if you find a scope base other than the weaver style I would like to know about it, I have the weaver style on my 647 right now but I would prefer the type that mounts onto the pistol via the drilled and tapped method. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do mine, they are a pretty impressive little piece. If you hunt with it don't forget to take along some ear plugs.

I got a bandolier style holster from Uncle Mike's. Works pretty good for me. It's made for a pistol with scope.

I've been looking for the right .17HRM handgun for a little while now for squirrel hunting. I was pretty set on getting the Contender G2 with the 14" .17 barrel, but am now looking more seriously at the Taurus Tracker model 17SS6 for the size (and $$).

I talked to a dealer about this piece and he assured me that it was drilled and tapped to accept the ($42.50) optional Taurus scope mounting base, but I can't find anything to support this on Taurus's website.

Can someone confirm for me that the gun is scope (mount) ready?
