Raging Bull in .44 mag
« on: April 28, 2011, 02:07:50 PM »
A while back it was stated that Taurus quality control left a lot to desire. Has it improved any? GB himself said he wouldn't buy one now, but did say the RBs where still good. Thinking of getting a RB in .44 but don't want my gun on vacations without me. Thanks for any and all help

I think the quality control has gotten better.
But take the time to look it over good before bringing it home.

I own several Smiths in both the model 29 and 629. Also have the 629 Smith custom shop gun with a 4 X Leupold that shoots great. I shoot a Taurus Tracker in .44 mag more than the Smiths. I was impressed enough with it that I bought several of them. The one I shoot the most has a 4 X TC scope on it. Took 4 deer with it this year. Longest was just over 150 yards, one shot. I do not feel
the least bit under gunned with a Taurus. I shoot handguns, and own several custom single actions.
My Raging Bull .454 shoots as good as my custom single action in the same caliber. It does not shoot
the 360 grain WNFP loads because the cylinder is limited to 300 grain loads.
Taurus has made some guns that sucked, but so has Smith, Ruger and Colt, I know because over the
years I have owned dogs from all of them. Buying only one gun and not shooting much it does not matter, if you are going to burn a bunch, bite the bullet and get a good single action. I have shot Smiths loose over time with a lot of heavy loads. The Taurus will shoot loose over time just like the Smith with a lot of heavy loads. That is why I bought several of the Trackers, time and heavy loads
works on the double actions. Even my Redhawks are not as tight as they were new.

The Old Redneck pretty much summed it up here.  No matter what firearm you buy, if you shoot it a lot, your going to shoot it loose with heavy loads.  This is why they make replacement parts.... the same can be said for vehicles.

Now I will say, what I like about the Raging Bull is the double lock up that non of the other modles have.  I have also owned several Taurus revolvers, no complaints from me about them neither and see no problems if one of our members wants a Raging Bull.  It never surprizes me when someone post about a certain model firearm, someone else has got to throw another brand or model in the mix.

The Topic was Raging Bulls, lets stay on topic for respect of the original poster.  Any questions, send me a PM.

Thanks

I apologize for getting off the Raging Bull. It just gets old hearing that Taurus is bad and brand X is perfect. None of them are without fault at some point in time. The Raging Bull out of the box will
usually shoot groups with any factory gun. As said before the double lock system is bank vault strong. I own and have owned several, would not blink or give second thought to buying another. Would buy one before I spent the money on another custom shop Smith.

glad to be of  some help

if  i didn't like double action revolvers so much

i would have suggested a ruger BLACKHAWK
they are real ruggged and nice guns.....[i dont like the red hawk....its not a smith]

20 years ago  i hated single actions
next thing  i new  i had 3 of them.....all rugers
my  629 is my favorite gun.............periods

i have heard it said the raging bull  is a good gun,,,for a taurus

[/tt]I once bought a new 629-5. biggest piece of crap I ever dealt with.
It was sent back to S$W 2 times, I now have a RB in .45 lc. I am extremly happy with it.
While the RB is not a ccw like the S$W was, it shoots and handles like a dream.

I have a Taurus Model 80 .38 Spl  made in '77. Ran hot loads for years even though it wasn't "rated" plus +P. It favors light bullet weights which is odd but it has been dependable. Only quirk, same quirk I have also had with a Smith, was the cylinder would drag the forcing cone after about 50 rnds. 10 minutes with a nail file fixed that.
