Remington STS hulls
« on: February 23, 2011, 05:41:51 PM »
Are the STS shells identified as such on the box, or is their another way to identify them? I always used the compression formed AA's but seeing that they are out of the question anymore, I was planning to start using the Remington STS's for reloading. I have been going the cheapie route with the Wally World Ammo, but the best that I can do with them in reloading is a shell that can be stuffed in a SXS, but my Saiga won't eat em, the crimps are really terrible, and tend to open after a while. BTW I'm talking about 12 Gauge hulls.................steg

Rem STS shells(12ga) are either gold or a metallic looking green. They have slick sides instead of like the ridged ones like on the GunClub or black bulk packs. I load all of them exactly the same with no problems.
You will have to pay attention to the crimps on the black hulls. Some are 6 point while others are 8 point. As far as I can tell, all seem to be the exact same shell other than color and the texture on the outsides.

steg, some components even though they are listed in a load guide are just not a good fit, which can lead to crimps opening up. what exactly are you using? maybe I can tell you something that would be a better "fit"

All the sts hull gets you is an all brass head versus a steel or brass washed steel head.   Every shell that rem makes in 2 3/4 12 gauge besides buckshot/slugs and heavy field loads is in a STS construction hull.

As mentioned what load are you using and on what press.

I'm using a lee press, and the winchester pink wads, don't remember the id number, and like a dummy I dumped them in a bin and tossed the bag, I did have it written down, WAA12R Wad, 9 .311 balls  21Gr Unique, I only use the press for the crimp and most of them look great, but in a few days quite a few of them will start to open, remember these are the cheap wally world hulls, once fired. Thanks for the interest and the info guys, I appreciate it.....................................steg

The Winchester pink wad is WAA12SL. The WAA12R is red, and too short for what you're loading. The SL wad should fit, but might be too shallow. I don't have any .311 balls cast right now, so I can't try it, but I believe I'd use a Winchester WAA12 (white) or Remington Fig.8 wad.  Unique is a little slow for the light load, but probably will work OK. Sometimes when loading Buck, I've found that an overshot wad works wonders for a neat crimp. Also, if you aren't using the press for wad insertion, make sure your wad is firmly seated on the powder -- use a dowel or pencil or something.
