45 colt/410 barrel question...454 brass?

Ok, just curious, but since there is such a long chamber, could one use 454 brass(with 45 colt loads) in the gun.  I know there is the danger factor with this, but as I am loading my own ammo, and have no interest in hot loads...

I'd love to hear some info on this as well.  I have a Super 16 I want to hunt with this year and am looking for any way to improve accuracy.  I know there needs to be a filler or something, right?  Heck, I even thought about getting some and putting about 50-60 grains of black powder in it as the volume is almost perfect for the shell length, but I'm a novice reloader and didn't want to do anything stupid without some feedback.

       Guys this bridge has been crossed before......do a search for 45 Mongo. ;)  It will get the bullet right out there to end of the chamber.

The 444 rim is smaller than the 410 and misses the extracter. The rim on 9.3x74R brass  is closer to 410 size. They are 3" long and will take a 410 shot cup. I also use candle drippings to seal shot in. Use unique or trail boss with a wax bullet to fireform. They take large rifle primers and you can use standard 45 LC reloading equipment. Hornaday brass are $1.30 each but will last forever.
I used an encore for load development. Some factory 45/410s are tapered before the lands and pressure is to high with 3" brass and heavy 45s. The contenders will not handle a 454 or 460 type load!
The shot loads worked best in my 10" contender.

I have had great results in many other calibers with Trail Boss...it is my favorite thing to load with...esp with 45/70...no fiber wadding needed to fill the space!

.444 Marlin rim is actually a couple of thoudands larger than the .45 Colt rim and fits the extractor of the TC just as well as the .45 C or the .410.  I've used them for brass case shot loads.

Yea, I've been trying to do some research as well but can't find anything I'm really comfortable with, especially considering the results.  For me, I was simply looking for a "pistol caliber" rifle barrel that I could use legally to take whitetail with here in Indiana.  I ended up with a 45/410 in Super 16, and, for the ranges we usually encounter deer here in southern Indiana, I think the so-so accuracy of the 45LC out of this barrel will do just fine for me.  If I need more accuracy or longer range, I'll take out my 209x50 Encore.

On a side note, I would love to load up some 45LC with black powder.  Anyone have any loading data to do so?  Curios about powder volume and rough velocities.  I currently have a 300 gr XTP bullet, but could play with other weights if needs be.

If you are talking about hunting loads Then thee is really no load for black powder.  Just fill you case so you don't have any voids in the case after loading the bullet.  I really don't know if you will get any more velocity with BP.  I would think of trying some of the other handgun powders like 2400 or H110.  They will give you great velocity and I think more accuracy.  I personally use a Mil surplus powder, WC820 and get great results in my .45 Colt pistols. 

I only wish TC would produce a dedicated .45 Colt barrel and not the combo.  I have an older .45 Colt barrel which I love to shoot, but it is not for my heavy duty loads.  It is an octagonal barrel and looks good, but I consider it fragile to the heavy stuff.

I can imagine!!!  My 44 mag octagon looks mighty thin at the muzzle and I'm sure the 45 LC is even more so!  The barrel would probably handle heavy loads better than your hand though.  My "higher pressure" 44 mag loads didn't seem to give mine any trouble, but I bought a bull barrel because of the recoil and will use the octagon for light loads or 44 specials from now on.

Straight 45 LC (only)
Picked up a "New Old style" barrel, with aprehension, using 300 gr  lead. It's a "bull" tapered barrel.
heavy loads and they shoot well at 50 yds. 2-3" group, if I do my part. this is from a wobbly bench.
It's a kick!

     I have 45Colt barrels in 10" octagon, 10" bull and 14" bull(a rechambered S-14 45WinMag) and, the relative amount of recoil(difference between barrels)with the same loads is truely amazing.  With a fairly stout 300gr load the S-14 is nice, the 10" bull is "Oh Wow" and the 10" octagon is "Ain't gonna do this again". :o : ??? ::)

Thanks, Larry!  I might have to load a couple up that way just to play around sometime.  I think I'm going to get rid of my 45/410 combo barrel and pick up a straight CS 45LC barrel.  The 410 is a hoot to shoot, but that's not why I own the barrel.  Keep your fingers crossed for me! 

I did put a few rounds through my combo barrel this weekend.  Standing, with open sights and in carbine format (16.25"), produced about a 2.5-3 inch group at 35 yards.  I think it would tighten up more if I was to bench it or something.
