handgun tracking

can the police/law enforcement people type in a serial # of a reported stolen gun and find out the status of it?-
do they have the capability to do so?-

If you are talking about if it is listed as stolen or recovedred, then they should be able to do that. If the gun is sold person to person  and no real paper trail then they can't unless the buyer submits the s.n. to them. A lot of states require certen type of guns to be redgestered and there is a paper trail for them it makes it easy for police to tell who has what

this is my situation- i file a theft report-give s/n the police are saying they dont have they authority to
check on a guns status if it has been recovered  by another pd 
how do i know that it hasnt been recovered
they can lie to me-and get away with it?-
