Restored SxS Shotgun
« on: February 18, 2011, 06:46:07 AM »
Bought a 12ga CVA SxS off a member here on the forums and just got it all put back together. Not completely happy with the stain job but it is unique... sounds like something I would say looking at a spike a buddy shot  :)

Barrels are going to be hit with duracoat as soon as it arrives in the mail. Mean time I will be hitting the range tomorrow to burn some powder. Good time ahead. Link is to the article series I am writing about the shotgun from refinish until I get a turkey with it.

Gee, Why not give it a nice rust brown?
Laural Mountain Forge.

I am sorta anti-brown....never been a big fan of the look. Yeah I know its not traditional but hey to each their own right?

I have heard they make some nice stains though.

The Laural Mt. Forge rust brown can be made into a nice blue/black by simply boiling the parts in distilled water as per instructions with the product.
I totally understand your frustration with staining the stock, some of the mystery woods just don't take a stain very well unless you go very, very dark.

i would have used some birchwood casey walnut stain on the stock. It really would have brought out the curl in the maple stock.

I dont believe it is maple. CVA put out alot of these kits with Beech stocks, although beech is similar to maple.

The problem lies with the type of stain I used ( oil based ) and the age and treatment of the wood. I just finished a new Traditions Kentucky Pistol Kit with a maple stock that took the same stain like a champ and brought out some beautiful character in the wood. This stock was different, I had to strip the previous finish and steam out dents and dings and Im sure oils and whatever else had soaked into the wood over time and left over from the old finish. I could strip it and refinish it again but at this point its just going to be my tiger striped ugly duckling. It is going to be a field gun that gets heavy use. I may use it to teach my son how to strip and re-finish when he is old enough but that is years away.

On the up side I shot it for the first time yesterday, range was about to close but I got two patterning shots off and busted up a few clays. I love the gun, easy to load and very instinctive on sporting clays. Need to work on tweaking my patterns but that will have to wait until I can hit the range early and make a day out of it. The neighbors get a little restless after 2 or 3 shots back in the woods, unless they are the ones shooting.

That stock looks like my NEF Handirifle after I stripped it and refinished it.  I'm thinking of stripping it again and trying something else on it....

A good alcolhol base stain, like Laurel Mountain Forge stain,  will cover imperfections in wood better than any thing else, it will seem expensive for a tiny little bottle but I usually thin it some with alcohol before useing....Ed
