The rifle will be used for crows and groundhogs.

I use a Bushnell Trophy 4x-12x on my 788 in 6mm and also my 788 in 22-250 and think they are a very good scope for the money.  I use these two rifles for the majority of my woodchuck hunting.
Good Shooting,
George

Well, one of my 223's that I use in the ground digger fields wears a Leupold 6.5-20X50 LR.  Great scope and the side focus is very handy, but it's very pricey.

Another wears a Nikon Monarch 5.5-16.5X44 that is every bit as nice a scope for way less than half the cost of the LR.

And if you want to go the cheap route, might take a look at the Swift Premier.   Have a couple of 4-12X40's that are a heck of a scope for $115.

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

I acquired a used 788 in 223 and put a 4 x 12 Bushnell on it.  I am a 788 fan but it never shot sub moa so I sold it and bought a 700 BDL.  I shot crows ground hogs and a couple of deer out to 175 yd. with the 788 but due to the lack of accuracy and estimating the hold over, I had trouble hitting crows at 200 to 300 yd.  I purchased a Burris ballistic plex 3x9 x40 for about $200 which is twice the price of the Bushnell but it  has increased my hits considerably.  The Burris seems more solid and is made in the USA but has a smaller objective and doesn't gather light as well.  I liked it so well I bought another Burris and put it on a 788 in .308 to take an antelope last Oct.  The Optic zone had the Burris B-plex and a 20x50 spotting scope all for $199 which I couldn't pass up.  I also got a 600 yd range finder which has been well worth the money for varmint and antelope hunting.    I don't like to miss but I do like to shoot.

Currently, I'm considering a Bushnell 6x18 Banner. Well see....
