Hi All,

I have loaded a lot of Holy Black, but in muzzleloaders not BPCR.  I have just started loading substitute BPs into cartridges, 777, Pyrodex & BH209.  I am going to start load real BP cartridges fairly soon.  I have been studying a lot and bugging my friends who have been shooting the real BP in cartridges.  I understand completely that an air gap and real BP is a good way to destroy a firearm and its owner.  Okay here is the question,  how come the air gap with a hollow base bullet isn't a problem?

BB, it's because HB bullets are reloaded with a wad up against the bullet base.  Now, I'm not saying this is done 100% of the time.  Also, the cup is really not an air gap being inside the base.  The ignition gases are going to strike the edges of the base and then into the cup

As for the air gap between the powder charge and the bullet base subject ... there are pages written on the subject.  We even has a tread going on The Open Range 3 or 4 years ago about it.  Believe it or not, one of the fellas found a loaded round that had been cut.  The air gap in it was wide enough to drive a Mack Truck through it.  This was a factory round!

Hello, Bikerbeans.  I too am looking forward to shooting the real black this year..I used to shoot alot in both M.L. & ctg. but became discusted with quality of the then available Goex (early 1990).  I gave up on it.  I am looking forward to using Swiss in an original Remington rolling block sporter in .40-70 str.  As to your question on air-gaps..I believe if a space is left between either a muzzle-loaded ball..or bullet, or in a cartridge..the gas has a running start & the un-seated ball or bullet acts like a bore obstruction.  In the case of a hollow-based bullet, like a minie ball..even though there is a fairly large cavity in front of the powder charge, the bullet is still (or should be!) in contact with said powder.  Best of luck with your black powder ctg. shooting!
