Having trouble taking down a Winchester mod 12
« on: February 08, 2004, 02:21:48 AM »
I'm trying to get the barrel & magazine assembly off. I've had this gun for a little over 3 years and have had it a apart to clean it maybe twice but not lately. Maybe I forgot a step in taking it down. If I'm remember right the pin at the end of the magazine tube is puhed through from left to right (as looking forward from butt to muzzle) then the magazine tube is turned and slid out some. Then the barrel can be rotated out (with the slide forward). I think I've got that sequence right. Do I? The prolem is getting that pin at the far end of the mag tube to go through so I can get the mag tube to rotate. It won't and it's driving me nuts :x. Anyone that can shed some light on this it would be appreciated. I'm not very much into shotgunning (forgive me) and haven't had this one apart since I shot it last not long after I got it in late 2000. I want to shoot some trap with it next weekend. It's a 12 gauge of 1924 vintage and has a 30" full choke barrel.
Thanks.

Been a lot more years since I did it than since you did but the procedure you mention sounds like I recall it. Not sure which way the pin goes but that is the first step. It should go one way or the other without a big hassle. Then turn tube, pull it out and turn barrel/tube assembly out. That's how I recall it working.

:D Is it possible that the pin was once removed entirely and put back in backwards?  It should snap into place at the assembled position.  The spring catches between the inside of the magazine tube and the chamfer on the hole in the end plug.  Try forcing it out in whichever direction it wants to go, and reinserting it the other way.

Thanks for your replies. Shorty you were right. What apparently happened was when I cleaned it last I took the end cap off to clean inside since that probably had never been done before. When I put it back together I put that pin in backwards. I got 'er fixed now  :-D. Time to bust up some clays.
Thanks again.
