Model 12 Jams
« on: December 21, 2003, 05:06:18 AM »
I have a Win Model 12 20 Ga pidgeon which jams up when pumping a new round. I noticed today that I accidentally picked up a box of high brass shells and was using those hunting. I have not tried using regular base game loads. Would the high brass shells possibly be the cause of the jam ?

It's possible..  Without knowing more about HOW the gun jammed it's hard to say.  Plastic shells leave a residue in the chamber which will trap moisture and caused chamber rusting.  I recently fixed the jamming of a perfectly fine M37 Ithica caused by a rusty chamber.  Perhaps polishing the chamber is needed.  I use a bit of steel fur (0000) on an old bore brush.  Wrap in the direction of the spin to avoid unrolling in the chamber.  Turn with an eletric drill.  A bit oil oil will bring a bit better polish.  If that's not the problem you'll need to tell us more about the occurance.  How did the weapon fail?

I have my Dads old model 12 in 16 gague and it don't like the new ammo.
The plastic shells will jam if you work the action fast!!the new shells crimp
are longer and that is what causes the problem it is stamped on the barrel
2 and 9/16 shells that is what the old ammo was..BUT they don't make them
anymore..

I don't believe the 20 was ever made in 2 9/16.  Firing 2 3/4 in 16 guage shells in your short chambered gun is Quite dangerous.  I would advise a trip to a gunsmith who can explain the situation to you and price the fix.  The chamber is cut too short.  As the crimp unfolds at firing it traps the shot column against the throat causing massive pressure spikes.  I strongly reccomend not firing the wrong ammo in any weapon,.  How is the 20 guage jamming?  Not feeding? Not ejecting? Double feeding?  Tell us more...

Model 12 in 20 ga.

The model 12 was made for 2 1/2" shells up till about 1926.  I doubt if your gun was made before then.  You probably have trouble with the lifter.  I have a new one if you need it.  I just rebarrelled a 20 ga. with the short chamber to handle the 2 3/4" shells.  It sure shucks sweet now.
