New Smith & Wesson 41, need advice.
« on: March 14, 2004, 04:29:56 AM »
I have a new S&W 41 pistol that I will eventually be installing a red dot sight on.

It is drilled and tapped for a base already.

This is the "best" 22 rimfire I will ever own and I want to research the best base, rings and of course red dot sight for it.

I was considering a Holograph type sight like the Bushnell Halosight,  What do you guys use suggest?

I have a Bushnell Holosight installed on my Model 41. It is a first generation and a little heavy but it is great. The Holosights made by Bushnell now are half the size and should be just right. Midsouth Shooters Supply had these 2nd generation Holosights on sale a while back they are smaller as well. The pricing wasnt all that much cheaper but is worth the money spent to me anyways.

If you're planning to use it for paper punching, the best choice is Adco's red dot. It's not very expensive, top quality, and considered the best by target shooters.  If you plan to get good with it in compeitition, you'll need a durable tool with high reliability and low replacement cost. The Adco does all of those things.

I have my eye on the same gun. I plan to get a model 41 but haven't decided on what length barrell. I have been looking at the Doctor holographic sight to put on it. The sight is expensive abot $300 but I cant see the economy to buy the top of the line target 22 and put a cheap red dot sight on it. Sprtsmans guide has the Doctor sight, the claim the FBI uses it on their firearms and it is claimed to withstand 500 Gs ,it comes with a 2 year warranty.
Small. Light. Extremely rugged. This DOCTERsight® 3.5 M.O.A. Red • Dot Sight is used by our FBI... FOR LESS!

Our own FBI trusts this very Sight to bring scumbags to justice. Now you can admire its performance on handguns, rifles and shotguns!
Precision second to none:

Withstands up to 500 Gs of solid recoil and riding on the slide of a .45 auto handgun
Frame is made of stainless steel, brass and anodized aluminum
Waterproof and dustproof
Windage and elevation adjustments are locked by set screws

The Bushnell Holosight is a 2 min of angle dot but can purchase a 1 minute of angle as well. To adjust the Bushnell it would be the same as a scope. TheDoctor Site is a little bit different there isnt a click adjustment you move the site after you loosen it and a good FBI guestimate would be the way to adjust. The design of the Bushnell is every bit as "FBI" tough as the Doctor Site. I looked at both and the field of view is a bit wider with the Bushnell. The Bushnell can be mounted on rifle shotgun and handgun but not with the Doctor. Of course you did look into this I am sure.

                                       Enjoy!!

Like you, I am a new model 41 owner. After trying a few different brands of ammo to see which one works best in my 41, I have come to realize that I am not capable of getting the best accuracy from my gun using only the iron sights. I just can’t focus on three different objects (front sight, rear sight, and the target) all at the same time. Even with my glasses on. So I have decided to add some optics to my 41. I just haven’t decided on which sight to buy. A couple of weeks ago I was fortunate enough to meet someone at the rod and gun club I belong to, who has a holograph sight on his model 617. He was even kind enough to let me give it a try. It worked great, but I did notice that the “lens” did have a scratch on it. I would think the red-dots would be less susceptible to this. I also saw a holograph sight called a “J-point” discussed somewhere here on the internet. I went to their site, to check it out because this sight has a base, which actually slides into the dovetail for the rear sight on the 41. I personally am leaning toward the Ultradot. It appears to be a new Ultradot. If you go to the Ultradot web site, you will see that they have two main distributors, Ultradot West and one other guy in Maine. I was looking over the Maine web site and if I remember correctly it is the very last one pictured. Like I said it has interchangeable dots in 2, 4, 6, and 8 moa dots, which should be ideal sizes for target shooting. Most other models have larger dots for hunting.

Keep us posted on your decision, and be sure to let us know how your decision works out for you. The only thing I do know for sure, is that I am very confused. So much to try, and so little money to spend.

The rear sight shouldn’t be a focus point, just the front blade. The target and rear sight will be more of a blur. With a little practice of focusing on the front sight the target and rear sight just kind of fall in place.

Be well,
Scott

Thanks everybody for your help with this question.

I ordered a DocterSight from Brownell's and a Ruger Mark II base.

There currently is no base for the S/W M41 and I learned that the dovetail of the Ruger  is the same as the dovetail of the M41.  There is some minor "smithing" to do to the base, I used a dremel tool and got very professional results.

Fortunately I was able to shoot a couple of target guns with this sight at my gun club.  I went with the 7moa model (there is a 3.5) as it works best for me at the 50 foot targets I shoot.  The DocterSight is also good for shot gun but I would use the 3.5moa.

The sight mounted on my M41 is very low, sets way back, at 25 grams it is an awesome sight.   I will consider this sight again for other "projects".

If anybody would like a picture you will have to PM me so I can send, as I am too stupid to do otherwise.

I ordered a set of Randall Fung target grips last week, the 5-6 week wait will be painful.

Thanks again for all input.
