Help with rifle stock choice
« on: April 15, 2011, 12:48:07 PM »
I am ready to order a stock for a .260 Rem on a 700 action with a 24" heavy barrel and want to dip into the knowledge here on GBO again. In your opinion what stock would you pick and why in a varmint, or target model? Weight is not a issue as it will not be carried long distance. I have been looking at Bel-Carson, McMillan, H-S precision trying to lay hands on and try as many as possible to see which feels right. As always thanks for the great advice!

Zeke, I've never knowingly used a rifle with a Bell & Carlson stock so I can't speak to them.  The USMC M40 sniper rifle uses a McMillan stock and the US Army M24 sniper rifle uses an H-S Precision stock.  Both rifles are modified M700 Remingtons.  Both are a good compromise in profile that work very well for prone unsupported shooting with the sling for support and still work pretty well for offhand and other positions.  I think McMillan sells the same stock as the M40 and lists it that way on their website.  I'm sure H-S could point you to the M24 stock, too.

Both stocks tolerate having the barreled action in and out of the stock often while keeping their zeros.  The M24, for instance, can have the action out of the stock, the day optical sight off, swap to the thermal sight and so on as many as ten times with no more than 0.5 MOA change in zero.  That's pretty good in my book.

I've got rifles with McMillan,B&C,H&S,MPI plus afew others.

You have alot more option using the B&C stock as to weight vs the H&S.  McMillan a good stock but it pricey same with some of the others.

Here a good place to look                           http://www.stockysstocks.com/servlet/StoreFront

Thanks for all of your advice! As always I'm not disappointed with the input I have received here on GBO

IMHO one of the best stocks you can get is the factory VSS laminate one. Properly bedded they don't give up anything to any others and they have a very comfortable shape. Plus they can be had pretty cheap when people "upgrade".

But remember, it is only my opinion.
