« on: February 07, 2011, 08:21:24 AM »
All,

I have an opportunity to purchase a brand new in box 45/70 Guide Gun in stainless for $549.00. I know this is a good price, but just wondering what all of you thought? I need to act fast, so please give me your unbiased opinion now!

Thanks

Good price, get it!!!!  I paid $600 for a good used stainless 45-70 xlr with ghost ring sight.  Has laminate stock.  Good shooter, but kicks.

That's about $20 less than I see here. If you want one, get it, not gonna get any cheaper down the road.  Not crazy about the recoil pad on mine, going to look into replacing it someday, no problem while hunting, gets tiresome just playing or sighting in.  DP

Well, I went back the next day and looked the gun over. It had a couple tiny nicks in teh stock. Barely noticeable, but if I buy a brand new gun, I expect it to be perfect. So, I turned it down. This past weekend, I was back in there and noticed the walnut/blue 45/70 that I never paid attention to before. Took a look at it and it was perfect. Well, took a day to think it over and brought it home last night. $474 out the door. Still having a hard time believing I got it for that! I can't wait to get it to the range this weekend!

Well, finally got to the range on Monday. Just shot 325 gr FTX Hornady Leverevolutions. I was hitting about 2 inch groups at 50 with open sights. (Yes, the eyesight is not what it once was.) Love this gun! Thanks for all the input from everyone! If any of you have some suggestions for a peep sight or ghost ring, I would love to hear it. I was not going to scope this gun, but I would also like to hear what others are using as my eyesight is probably not going to recover to the point that plain open sights will be sufficient.

You can buy a ghost ring or Williams peep sight to fit the scope holes in the rear.  You will have to punch out the rear leaf sight to use a peep or ghost ring.  Either the peep or ghost ring are faster to get on target than the traditional leaf rear sight.  If you don't scope, this is the way to go.
