shotgun wads for muzzle bullets
« on: December 19, 2003, 02:58:53 PM »
I read somewhere that folks were using the bottom portion of a shotgun wad loaded on top the powder charge then the bullet/sabot was loaded.  Can anyone recommend a wad for my 45 cal muzzle and 50 cal muzzle.  I would like to see if it adds to the accuracy or V.

Toby has been using AA 28 ga. wads, economical and widely available, as a sub-base or "over-powder" wad for a long time now in his .50 caliber 10-ML Savages for some harder to ignite smokeless charges. He just trims the petals off.

Look for MMP to have locking sub-sabot bases as stock product in the near future, in .50 caliber to start with. No accuracy improvement has even been claimed (that I know of) with the more common 100 grain area Triple 7 loads.

Will the AA28 sub-base work in a 45 caliber barrel??

I read about a guy having trouble stuffing the red, (high pressure?) "AA"
wads down the barrel, whereas the pinkish colored (low pressure?) wads
work fine. Is this true?

True if someone says so, I guess. AA wads don't come in "high pressure" configurations-- the SAAMI limit is around 12,000 PSI - - - higher only for .410 and 3-1/2" 12 ga. loads.

Look for hemi-headed MMP sabot bases that lock to existing sabots, offering consistent pressure to the sabot base in the near future that will moot the issue.
