Well I have a 14 twist 250 and was doing everything possible to get the 64 grain win x bullets to fly but with no luck. To long I quess. 50 and 55 grain is what I am told the gun was developed to shot but I spoke to the tech guy at hornady and he said the 60 grain sp they offer is very short for its weight and that he has never had an issue with it in a 14 twist. I am going to give them a try.

;) I have had excellent luck with ww 64 grain bullets in my .222, 223. 22-250, .22-250 Imp. and .220 swift...In the .22-250's I used IMR 4350 powder...my favorite varmit bullet from prairie dogs to coyotes is either the 50 grain Blitzking or Vmax...

wyo- what was the twist and barrel length on the 22-250 that you got them 64 grainers to stabilize in. i tried them with h4350 and no good with my 14 twist

I think the 14 twist is too slow to stabilize anything over 55gr. or so.

FWIW, Greenhill says .224 in a 1:14
Max weight: 50gr.
Max Length: .54"
Its a function more of length than weight and more velo can stabilize only to a point.

Looking at greenhill the 60 grain hor sp the length is .700 which is pretty short. You need to push this bullet atleast 3400 ft per sec to get to 1.30 which they say is the min for stability. Looking at most powders its def able to be done as the max on most are pushing around 3600. I have them but have yet to load them up yet. going to go with h4350 to start.

Im confused here. I thought the 22-250 only came in 1-14 twist. Am I mistaken?

1:14" is the standard twist for H&R 22-250 barrels.

It wasn't in a H&R but my own 22-250s always had excellent results with 53, 55 & 62 gr bullets. THE powder was H380. It was designed around the 22/250 hence it's name. 38grs and a 55 gr bullet.

;) Deerhunter#1, the twist on all my big .22's and all 222's and 223's exept my mini 14 are 1-14...I have shot 63 gr. Serrias, 64 grain WW and 70 grain Speers in the big .22's with excellent accuracy..if you look at all three bullets they are NOT sharp spitzer style..I believe they were made with the slightly round nose to be fired in most twists..While you may not get excellent accuracy, I have shot Serrias since the 70's in my .22-250's and 222...never had a problem with accuracy...Like I said in the big .22's I used IMR 4350 and had excellent accuracy in the .22-250, the Improved and the Swift...I never really tried any other powders because 4350 gave excellent results..I did load a top load according the books..cw mentioned H380...I maybe shot a pound of it years ago..and has he state it was the powder for the .22-250...but for some reason, I always felt I got better accuracy and speed from other powders...

The best I have ever ran across in any of my 3 250s is the old (no longer in production) 52gr BTHP Winchester Supream in the black & red box, stock # S22250.
I hate it when a company has a great product and quits production of it just because everyone gets on a new bullet kick.
I have yet to find a factory 250 load that will touch the old supream ammo in my Winchester model 70 heavy varmint!
Everyone wants the B-Tips.
I have 2 Win model 70s, both 270 wsm and 3 Handis in 204 that love the B-Tip ammo but not my 250s.
That's why I always say, once you find an ammo that your gun likes, go out and buy all you can find of it because you never know when the factory will drop it!!!

My son and I both bought our 22-250 Handis at the same time.

My loves 55gr and his loves 45gr.

Mine patterns 4" with 45gr and his does the same with 55gr.

Each gun seems to have a life of it own.

Since I'm now reloading it's 55gr boattails.  My son either shoots those
and complains or buys off the shelf since he has yet to buy any 45gr
for me to reload.  He's waiting for the old man to buy some 45gr.

Won't happen.

For the price of a box of ammo he needs to buy a box of bullets and let you do some loading for him.
Then he would have 5 boxes of ammo for about the same price.
Don't understand this new math!!!  ::)

getting some really good groups with 40gr Speers over light loads of Varget.  Don't know about velocity (I suspect somewhere around 3600) but they are grouping 3/4" at 100 and just whop the H_E_double hockey sticks out of crows.
