Flight Service for Hunters in Valdez
« on: December 19, 2003, 06:33:57 AM »
Guess this is for Daveinthebush, but anybody else with experience, please chime in.  Looking for a good flight service out of Valdez, someone with a 170, 180, 185, or larger on floats.  Don't need anything as big as a Beaver or Otter, probably 206 is as big as it needs to be.  Would like someone that is experienced with hunters doesn't mind hauling hunters or meat to and fro.  Someone that knows the sheep country north of Valdez over to Tazlina Lake and knows where the guides and outfitters usually go (so I can stay out of their way).

Thanks a ton.

What time of year are you looking at?  No one keeps there planes at the harbor here; too rough.  I know that there are a couple in Cordova that are still flying this time of year.

I suppose your looking for moose next fall.  Ketchum use to be here but downsized his operation a few years ago and no longer is operating here. I haven't seen a Beaver operating here at all.

I will ask around but I don't know of anyone. :(

Dave,
I was hoping you'd check in.  I was looking at late August, early September.  Am looking for an amphib or floats, for hauling my sorry carcass around.  I know there is an older gentleman that flies out of Valdez to Tatitlek on a nearly daily basis in a red and white 180 (with a 185 engine) amphib.  I believe he does a mail run and passenger service.  I can't recall his name though.  I think he used to be a doctor(??).  I've used Cordova Air a ton in the past, and really do like them, but it just seems a little far for them.  Might be closer to get someone out of Glenallen or Gakona.

There's a place that looks pretty good near Tazlina Lake that I was thinking about trying for sheep this coming year (if not drawn for any of the primo areas).  Looks like it would be a lot cheaper to fly out of Valdez (at least clock time) than anywhere else.

There is an old doctor over here with a Cessna 185 on floats that is out in the sound quite a bit.  I have been asking around for his name but no one can tell me yet.  I hae to go to the gun shop on Thursday and if the owner is ther he might be able to answer the question for us.
