has anyone ever re-bored and rifled a handi to .41 mag
« on: March 15, 2011, 06:56:46 PM »
While I readily admit there are better choices for a project to build around, but I have the .44 Mag handi and revolver.  I also have a .41 Mag revolver built the same year I was born :), so Iintend to keep it active through out my life.  While making a minor repair today it occurred to me that perhaps a handi barrel could be re-bored and rifled, and then chambered for the .41 Mag.  Has this been done before? Where to start .357, .22 Hornet, or other barrel?  I have seen posts of people reporting on re-bored barrels, but not the .41.

Just a dream (pipe dream  ;) ) right now, but perhaps over the next year...

It's been discussed before, but I don't recollect anyone ever doing one, I have a 405 Win which is the only .41X" something I've ever seen here.  ;)

I talked about doing it long ago but the cost of such a project just don't make sense to me. Once I got the .45 Colt it made even less sense. Have at it you very well could be the first one on the block.Kurt

Kurt,  I posted once about the 41 mag.  I sold my Marlin 1894 in the caliber and had all this 41 mag stuff left over.  The TCA custom shop does produce 41 mag barrels and someone suggested stubbing one of those for a handi rifle.  Seems like the long way around though.

I think this would be a great project. I am doing a similar thing now, having one rebored to 10mm because I shot more 10 then anything else and think it would make a great companion to my delta elite. I did a stub project in 45acp for the same reason and it came out great and is a lot of fun to shot and very accurate. You should be able to have a 357 barrel re bored.  The best price I have found for the re bore so far is $250 but I just started looking, since this is my first re bore project I don't have that much experience with them, the stub projects I did myself. Perhaps some else can recommend a company that they have experience with.

I have the same notion. A matched pair, rifle and hand gun. I have the 45LC pair, a 45 ACP and a stub project for the rifle will be completed in April. I purchased the 45 ACP barrel blank from Green Mountain Barrels for 33.00. I thought I saw that they could/would make custom blanks. They do offer a 15" SS 41 mag barrel for around 80.00. I am sure they could make a 20" blank with no effort. For 250.00 one could make a stub and purchase all the parts including the reamer. If I sell the reamer I purchased for the 45 ACP my project will cost less than 150.00 including frame and wood. I do have a 41 mag S&W Classic Hunter. If the 45 ACP project goes well, I will be pursuing the 41 mag this summer.

what needs to be done to a green mountain blank to fit it to a handi?  I have the skills to finish ream a chamber (by hand) and I can fit an existing barrel to a frame ( if only metal removal is required)  putting the sights on and drilling and tapping is a no brainer for me.  But the "under lug" that houses the ejector and rides on the hinge pin looks like it would be over my head to fabricate and install.

If your asking me? A stub is a H&R/Nef barrel, I am using  a 12g, Cut off at the taper. Tapped into the chamber. The barrel blank is then threaded into the stub. The under log and fitting are on the stub. A new ejector the right hight is then installed after machining the slot. A machinist with a lath is required. Not a difficult chore for a qualified guy. My buddy has a shop in his garage and a deer camp beside it, up in the mountains. He is a serious gun collector and shooter. Fishing, hunting and machining. There is no cost for the shop work to me and I get to spend time in the outdoors with family and friends. I do not figgure the cost of the shop work in my projects. That may make a re-bore more cost effective.

Stubbing is well cover by Larry in the FAQs, complete with pics of the process.  ;)
