Price on a 45-70-updated
« on: March 08, 2011, 03:59:16 PM »
I will be going to a firearm auction and they have two 45-70s for sale: SB2 Handi in 45-70 with a Simmons scope and a Shikari 45-70. Don;t know the condition on either. What would be a reasonable price on these? Thanks.

I bought my 22 inch Handi ejector .45-70 for 298 with a Simmons 3-9X50.  I later traded the ejector here for an extractor barrel......and have been a happy camper.  It is a shooter.

On the Shikari my guess is $250-275, the newish one depends on the model; a std Handi less than an Ultra Hunter. Just use the new price for a comparable, minus $50 and plus half price for any scope, etc.
Of course, condition is everything for top dollar, but this lets you know a limit to bid, then no more!
Anything way less than this suggestion is take both and run, dont walk to your car, where you stashed your gun rugs for a warm ride home.

Bud's sells the wood stocked 45-70 Handi for $260 shipped, the Shikari can sell for anywhere from $125 to $300 or so, depending on condition.

Thanks guys that helps a lot. We will see how the auction goes- I may walk away with one, two or none!

About 3-4 years ago I attended this same auction house for a firearm auction, looking at a 4570 handi but I was new to the handi addiction and didn't know quite what I was looking at. Some honest wear, a little freckling, and loose barrel fit turned me off. That plus the fact that it was among the last of the items so I walked away. That rifle sold for $90 IIRC. :'(

Some arent put off by obvious stuff like that, to them it has 'potential'; to others it is a 'bag of woe'.
"A man's got to know his limitations."
I prefer a 'distressed seller' rather than a 'distressed piece'. Note I dont say this as an example of taking advantage of someone, but as an object lesson at making choices I can live with.

At that time I was too new with Handis to know what to look for and what I could do with a used one.  Part of the attraction of these rifles for me is that they are easy to work on so you can modify them yourself.

I will let you know how this auction works out.

Joe, they're worth what you are willing to pay, and what the seller is willing to let them go for. I bought one of mine new, a 45-70 SB2 for $250 (give or take a few bucks) and one used for $125.00  this was a .22 K Hornet stainless / synthetic with scope mounted, and two boxes of fire formed brass.

At auction I would not get into a bidding war over either one of those, but would offer up to $175 each, paying more for unknown condition and histories... I'd buy new.

Keith that is about what I was thinking too. Based on the sale history with this auctioneer, I may be able to get one for half price or less compared to new.
There doesn't seem to be a real interest in handis around here.

Yeah, I get alot of looks when I take a Handi to a public shooting event or range.  Some even openly sneer, until they are out shot by a budget rifle :D

Well I didn't get to go to that auction-got the flu stuck at home for several days. That SB2 45/70 with cheap scope and sling went for $170 which was the one I really wanted. After seeing the recent prices on barrels alone here on the Classifieds I feel depressed that I missed out on this deal.  :(

I was at an auction and a 243 with pallet went for 280, and then he had to pay 8% fee and 10 percent tax. not a wise purchase. some people just get caught up in the bidding.
