Hit 300 yards for the first time ever today.
« on: March 27, 2011, 11:52:44 AM »
I have been a shotgunner since I was old enough to shoot and with the exception of my .22 I didn't do much with rifles until recently.

My H&R .223 is the first scoped "long range" gun I have ever owned and I think I finally got the bugs worked out of my scope turret.

It was really cold again today and by the time I got to fire at the 300 mark I only had 5 shells left. I zeroed it at 200 and let them rip. I couldn't see where I was hitting so I just kept launching them.

Managed to put 2 on the paper, the other 3 hit just below the target, about 9 inches low but all on the same horizontal line (which I was also happy about)

The ammo was the $3 a box Russian stuff as well so I can't complain.

I know it isn't much compared to alot of people, but man was I happy to see the hole on the paper. Hopefully when it gets warmer out I can hone my skills a little without my fingers going numb.

This is the problem I was dealing with the first time. The top turret is the one they sent me with the scope, the bottom is actual MOA adjustments. My results at the range were perfect with the Hornady chart so I went ahead and added the 400 mark from the come up on the chart (like I'm gonna shoot at anything that far around here anyway  :o)

There's a lot of satisfaction shooting 300 yards.  I even try it with my .22LR.  My .308, 223, 7mm-08 .30-06 and .45-70 know where 300 lives.  The '70 shoots a big rainbow, but when you learn it, you can take a buck off his toes with one well placed shot.  Oh, BTW, my Handi .223 shoots junk Russian ammo just fine...1 in 9 wist, 55 gr.

We have mostly woods around here. And I've shot loads of deer, but all with either my 20 gauge or my 30-30, both with iron sights.

If a deer is farther away than 70 yards in our spots, you can't see it anyway.

The first time I saw the paper at the 300 mat I was a bit awestruck, we don't get shooting lanes that far.

18 (ish) years ago I bought a Savage .25'06 with 24" barrel with 4-16x50, and loading dies.  After five years, and many pounds of powder burned, I put it on a shelf where it silently waits today.  The problem is it gets too easy.  Ten deer (mix of does and bucks) taken at distances from 200 to 425 yards.  Where I was hunting if I could see it I could kill it.  Practice was golf balls at 150 to 250 yards.

Now I limit myself to revolvers, muzzleloaders, and either .45-70 or .44 mag Handi.

Oh, for the first hits that's good.  Details on the loading bench, and with how you hold the rifle will tighten groups, so will being able to read the mirage, and wind.

Shooting beyond 100 yards is fun!  Keep it up, and wait until the day when you remember 300 yards as being a long ways, you'll be astonished what a rifle can do.

tykempster,
You are absolutely right!! What's really fun is 800 yards with .45-70's.  Looks like, from your avatar, you shoot .45-70, and .45-120??

I really like reactionary targets when i am practicing.  The range in Fairbanks is a 300 yard range.  The big buroum in the back to catch the bullets is 337 yards from the shooting benches.  I like to throw 4" clay skeet targets out on the bank.  Then sit and shoot them.  When hit they really bust up.  Then we aim at the pieces.  With the 223, and the 22-250, it's a piese of cake.  With the 17HMR it really gets tricky, and we miss a few.  Don't worry about hitting it dead center, just hitting it is enough.  Soon you are hitting it every shot. At that point you are ready to move on to farther ranges.

I use a Gallon Milk Jug filled with water next.  Sit the target on a stand with paper underneath.  That lets you see how low you are shooting.  Then at 25 yard incraments move out farther.  If you have a scope with mil dots, or yardage marks you can learn which marks to use at given ranges.  Or if you have a Tactical scope this is where you learn to dial.

Good luck, it's loads of fun for me.

With the 223 I'm good out to 500 yards.  With the 22-250 and the 30-06 I can go on out to 700.  With my 338/378 Weatherby I am good out to 1200.

I have an aiming point in my scope for 300 yds that's on my 22 long rifle. I use it for prairie dogs. I don't use it much because the groups are too big at that range to do any good. A dog at 300 yds when I have my 223 had better watch out though.

I also shoot high power rifle.  High power rifle is the ultimate shooting sport.  If you can shoot the National Match Course well, you can shoot anything.  The 300 yard stage is rapid fire from prone position with a leather sling.  The ten-ring is 7" and the X-ring is 3”.  The competition is tough.  To be a real player one must score 95 or better at this stage.

Good job- Sitdwnandhngon, I can't tell you how good of a shot I have made on quite that long of distance, but I too am trying the .223 longer distance shooting this summer for the 1st time. I would be happy to hit the target at that distance too on the 1st try. Good luck on zeroing it up N on, I really hope to be able to hit Prairie dogs at 200 and I think it would be a picture for the "trophy room" (ok it's just a bunch of pics magneted to a locker....)  if I killed one at 300yds. They just seem so small.....  Good luck and keep having fun. I hope to be doing the same soon.  -thejanitor

I just bought a Handi-.223 bull barrel, 1 in 9 twist, for shooting large-for-caliber jacketed bullets, and long(er) range than the 227 yards that I currently feel comfortable within which to shoot.  A good scope is important.  You guys that can SEE the target through open sights at long distance get my applause.  I cannot.  I would love to "P-dog" hunt in the west.  Being a member of the 400-500-600 and longer range "club" would be fun.  Wringing out lazer accuracy from these old eyes and shaky hands, well, I am not holding my breath.

Good shooting Sitdwnandhngon.  You've gotten the "bug", now you gotta live with it.  The "dance" gets longer and farther away.  Pretty soon, the gravitational pull of the moons around Saturn will be weighing heavily on your mind.  Just kidding.  Good shooting.
